Concussions

What is a Concussion?

A concussion is referred to as a (TBI) Traumatic Brain Injury. Concussions can vary in severity and symptoms. Concussions can occur from direct blows to the head or body, or fast changes in direction. Symptoms can include headache, balance and visual problems, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, delayed or difficulty with speech, comprehension and concentration difficulty, and confusion. Other symptoms may arise because of a concussion.

Concussions regardless of the severity need to be taken seriously. If not treated properly could result in long-term and life-changing effects. If you are concerned your child has a concussion reach out to Zack Bebee for a concussion screening.

Below is the Sanford Health Return to Play (RTP) protocol. This will be followed and completed before an athlete is cleared to play, along with other tests.

Dr. Preszler a Clinical Neuropsychologist in Bismarck, is our concussion specialist. He treats athletes with long-lasting and or severe concussion symptoms. Zack will refer patients to Dr. Preszler if needed.

*All athletes at Watford City High School must follow the Sanford return to play protocol. The athletic trainer is the only person who can clear a student athlete following a concussion per school policy. The school policies and procedures can be found here: https://www.watford-city.k12.nd.us/Page/1431.
