The following is a sample of course offering opportunities.
Pump Operator I Program
The Pump Operator I program (PO-I) is an entry level program for driver/operator candidates, or operators looking to refresh on the basics. The program is delivered in a 20 hour package over one weeknight and two full weekend days. The course topics include;
Principles of water supply systems
Basic hydraulics
Hose, nozzle and appliance review
Apparatus component review
Calculating pressures for one and two handlines
Operating from the booster tank and transitioning to a pressurized source (hydrant or nurse tender)
Two engione relay pumping
Single line drafting operations
The goal of this program is to establish basic fundamentals of operating the pump at everyday firefighting operations. Selected skills from NFPA 1002 (Professional Qualifications for Driver/Operator) are included in this course.
Initial Rural Fire Attack Strategies
Classroom/Interactive
This program focuses on the critical tasks of establishing and maintaining a usable fire flow when no public water supply is available. Topics covered include;
Preplanning responses
Identifying realistic fire flows
Evaluating hose and nozzle systems
Rapid deployment of attack lines and master streams
Nurse tender operations
Through classroom presentation and assessment of apparatus and equipment, the course will help to identify strategies and considerations for fast and efficient fire attack in rural areas.
Water Shuttle Operations-Dump Site Basics
Hands-On
This program focuses on the steps necessary to establish an efficient water shuttle dump site. Through practical exercises and discussions, some of the critical steps to success will be illustrated. Topics covered include;
Site selection and setup
Source pumper setup and operations
Water transfer
Water Shuttle Operations-Fill Site Basics
Hands-On
This program provides guidance on the steps necessary to establish an efficient water tender fill site. The program can be adapted to work with hydrants or static sources. Topics covered include;
Selecting a suitable site
Setup and coordination of the site
Fill site techniques - adapted for local SOPs
"Pit crew" style operations
This course will provide insight and opportunities for the efficient filling of water tenders, and like all programs is adaptable to local needs.
Water Supply Alternatives
Hands-On
This program provides guidance on the steps necessary to establish an efficient static water supply point utilizing alternative methods. The program can be adapted to work with different available water sources. Topics may include;
Water eductor operations
Extended length drafting operations
Use of portable pumps or brush trucks to provide water supply
This course is adapted to local needs and available equipment.
High Volume Pumping-Operating from Fire Hydrants
Hands-On
This program provides guidance on the steps necessary to establish high volume water supply connections to fire hydrants, enabling the support of master stream operations. Topics covered include;
Understanding pump ratings
Pump plumbing and design
Water supply appliances and hose for high volume operations
Making high volume connections
Effectively utilizing the available water supply
This course will bring awareness to fire departments on the often unused potential of water supply systems.
High Volume Pumping-Operating from Draft
Hands-On
This program provides guidance on the steps necessary to establish high volume water supply connections from static sources, enabling the support of master stream operations. Achieving pump capacity and even exceeding rated capacity from draft will be discussed and demonstrated when suitable equipment is provided. Topics covered include;
Understanding pump ratings
Pump plumbing and design including comparing efficiency of front, side and rear pump intakes
Water supply appliances and hose for high volume operations
Making high volume connections for drafting
Effectively utilizing the available water supply
This course will bring awareness to fire departments on the often unused potential of water supply systems.
