Curve number lab preparation
Associated lecture materials
To prepare for lab activities, first be sure you have reviewed the associated materials from lectures on stream flow response to precipitation.
Contents of this module
Introduction
This lab activity is centered on working through some examples of the curve number method (2:00 min).
Templates for example
To follow along with building a curve number method spreadsheet, you might want to download the spreadsheet template.
Also you might want to follow along using the curve number tables used in the video.
Curve number analysis
With the template and tables above, we can work through an example of how to add the formulae to the spreadsheet necessary for completing a curve number analysis using a couple different methods (42:50 min).
The video above covers how to build the formulae, but you may want to adjust a given number for antecedent conditions. Also, you may want to use a tabular version of a precipitation intensity-duration analysis to determine the total precipitation you want to consider for a design flood. Here is a review of how to use these tables (4:05 min).
Curve numbers in city planning
Some of the tables used in the exercise were extracted from the Billings storm water manual (February 2011 version).
