Smock Mill
The Smock mill is so named because the shape is likened to a countrymans smock. The model, shown here in my workshop, is an early type with wheel and chain as the method of turning the cap. The mill is fitted with four manually operated spring sails, the setting of which requires that the sails are not turning whilst they are individually adjusted via a lever mechanism. The gallery boardwalk permits the miller to move around the mill whilst working the chain and also keeps animals away from the sweeps
Little known fact: in 99.9% of windmills the sails go anti clockwise when viewed from the front, most makers of model windmills seem to be unaware of this. Even the famous Moulin Rouge in France has the sails going clockwise
