The Provo River tumbles over a series of scenic waterfalls as it flows along Hwy 150 in the Uinta Mountains. A signed parking area and overlook are provided along the highway. A short trail leads from the overlook down to the river. Spur trails run up and down the river to the waterfalls.
As we were on our way to the Cataract Gorge turnoff (21 miles east of Kamas), I noticed several signs about fire trucks entering the highway. We arrived at Murdock Basin road. A forest ranger got out of his truck with flashing lights to tell us the road was closed due to a forest fire. The fire was out but the area was closed to hiking for another week. He gave us a map with the closed area marked. We noticed a Provo River Falls Outlook on the map just down the road so we found this falls by accident--a very serendipitous discovery!!
It was a spectacular! We decided to hike up the river and came to another waterfall. So we continued and keep seeing more and more waterfalls. We went about 3/4 mile before coming back. Then we went down the river and there were two more really big falls.
We visited Provo River Falls again in November. There were snowpacked roads for the last 10 miles and the main fall was frozen and covered with snow. We hiked down stream throught the snwo and did see two very small falls.
As we walked up the river we kept coming to more falls.
Kurt took off his shoes, rolled up his pants to cross to the other side for pictures--the water was very cold!
As we continued hiking up the river, we saw more falls.
We had the forest and river to ourselves.
More impressive falls down river.
