Classical Athens was a powerful city-state. It was a center for the arts, learning and philosophy, and the home of Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum. It is widely referred to as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy.

Nowadays, Athens is a large cosmopolitan metropolis and central to economic, financial, industrial, maritime, political and cultural life in Greece. In 2021, Athens' urban area hosted more than three and a half million people, which is around 35% of the entire population of Greece.

Alimos (Greek: Άλιμος) is a bustling seaside town close to Greece's capital Athens. It was formed in 1968 and was named after the ancient settlement Alimous. “Als” is the ancient Greek word, used initially for a grain of salt and then for the sea, while “Alimos” was the name of the plant “Marsh Samphire”, which was growing abundantly in the area.

Alimos was the homeland of the great historian of antiquity, Thucydides. He was born in the Municipality of Alimos around 460 BC.

According to the latest census, the population exceeds 41,000 inhabitants. However, it is estimated that more than 55,000 people live in Alimos.
