On 10 April 2026, we conducted an educational workshop at Primary School Dobrepolje – Kompolje Branch as part of the WasteDigest project and EKOŠOLA project -Mlekastično.
During the workshop, pupils learned about local food and sustainability practices in the food industry, with a special focus on sustainable food packaging. The aim was to raise awareness of the importance of responsible food production and consumption.
In addition, students were introduced to the profession of a food science researcher, gaining insight into the role of science in ensuring food quality, safety, and sustainability.
The workshop was interactive and well received, highlighting the importance of early education in shaping future attitudes towards sustainable food systems.
The workshop was also featured in the municipal newsletter of Dobrepolje, Naš Kraj, where it was presented to the local community.
Every year, the Jožef Stefan Institute (JSI) organizes the Open Day, giving the public a closer look at its research.
During the 2026 Open Day (28 March 2026), researchers from the WasteDigest project presented the aims of the project and led interactive activities focused on sustainable practices in food systems. Participants learned how by-products, such as rosemary solid waste from essential oil production, can be valorized into valuable bioactive compounds, and explored concepts of zero-waste production, circular economy, and food safety.
Through hands-on games and interactive activities, children and families could engage with the topic in a fun and educational way.
Around 200 participants attended the Open Day, showing great interest in sustainability and strategies to reduce food waste.
