History of Washington Square West

History

The historic Washington Square West neighborhood follows William Penn’s original grid layout for the city, with many one-lane and pedestrian side streets added later as the population became more dense. In addition to the block sized Washington Square Park to the East, the neighborhood contains the smaller Kahn Park, named after the Philadelphia architect Louis I. Kahn. Originally the neighborhood was bounded by the east side of Seventh Street, the north side of Chestnut Street, the east side of Broad Street and the north side of South Street.

About the Washington Square West Trust

We’re proud to call Wash West home. It contains historical treasures, yet boasts some of Philadelphia’s trendiest restaurants, shops and gathering places. It is home to diverse residents and notable institutions, including Pennsylvania Hospital — the first hospital in the nation — and Thomas Jefferson University. Perhaps best of all, it’s within walking distance of many of Philadelphia’s famed cultural activities and entertainment options.

We owe a debt of gratitude to the many neighbors past and present who shape it to become the wonderful place it is today. A place where young families want to live, with trees lining the sidewalks, charming row houses, and vibrant retail attractions like historic Antique Row and the jewel in the neighborhood’s crown, the lovely Kahn Park at 11th and Pine.
