In a rematch of the 1917 Mayoral election, with the same results, Erastus Roberts defeated Louis Hoeflin for the position.  Roberts had made it clear he was not a candidate for re-election and did not want to run.  His supporters, via write-in, put him on the ballot anyway.  Roberts subsequently made it clear that if elected, he would serve dutifully, but he didn’t want to.  He served out the term with honor.
