Referred to as "Developmental" and/or "Small-Sided" soccer the U9 & U10 age groups are typically the first true stages of travel soccer. Games at this age are 7v7 (6 field players + goalkeeper) and consist of two 30 minute halves. Substitutions can only be made when the ball is out of play after signaling the referee of an intended sub.
There are special rules at this age group. We've highlighted the most important below. Keep in mind some referee's may interpret or apply specific rules differently. Always ask the ref to explain a rule to you and the players before the game if you are unsure.
The Build-out line is designed to be a tool to help teams learn how to "build from the back". The line provides a cushion for the defense to advance the ball away from their goal. The build-out line comes into play in 3 game play scenarios. The 2 listed below and "Offsides", explained in a separate section.
When the goal keeper has the ball in their hands, the opposing team MUST move behind the build-out line allowing the keeper to put the ball in play.
When there is a goal kick the opposing team MUST move behind the build-out line before the kick is taken.
Exceptions & Notes
If the keeper releases the ball before the opponents move behind the build out line, the ball is in play. Teach your keepers to be patient and wait before releasing the ball.
The opponent must remain behind the build out line until:
The keeper releases the ball and another member of their team touches the ball.
A goal kick is taken and another member of their team touches the ball.
If after released by the keeper or played by a goal kick and the ball comes to a stop without being touched, the opponent can cross the build-out line.
In 7v7 the Build-out line serves as the "Offside" line. Players can be on their side of the build-out line and still be onside. This is different from 9v9 and 11v11 where the mid-line is the offside line. Be careful of opposing players cherry-picking behind the defense but on their side of the build-out.
The keeper can roll or throw the ball when in possession. Or place the ball on the ground and kick it (no drop-kicks).
Players are too young to head the ball at this age.
Players are given 2 chances to make a proper throw-in at this age level.
