Our 6th-8th grade players have finally reached the BIG field. We play 11v11 at this age group, but as with other ages this may adjust to 10v10 or even 12v12 depending on the umber of payers available. Most players at this age group have prior soccer experience and are familiar with the rules. However, there may be a significant skill gap between players at this age group. Most coaches at this level also have prior coaching experience. We suggest utilizing the tools from our apps and resources page to excel your coaching at this age group.
The typical format for this age group is 11v11 (10 field players + 1 Goalkeeper). This can vary in Rec soccer to be 10v10 or even 12v12 depending on the number of players available. In an 11v11 format there are several formations to use. One of the most basic and easy to understand is the 1-4-4-2. As shown in the image the 1-4-4-2 demonstrates 4 layers of field positions starting with the Goalkeeper and moving up the field. There are a lot of 11v11 variations to shoose from, the best choice is the one that fits the players on the team the best.
