We are continuing the long tradition from Dr. Ellen Druffel's lab to sample the Newport Beach Pier (CA) monthly for temperature and dissolved inorganic carbon isotopes. It also gives us the opportunity to engage with the public and eat delicious donuts. (photo credit: Taylor Hart!)
We continued our participation within the ArcticNet biogeochemistry group aboard the CCGS Amudsen in sampling 2 legs of the 2023 expedition. Student Aislinn Fox did a comendable job sampling Northern Greenland, receiving a certificate for the most northern sampling the ship had performed to date in the Lincoln Sea. The study also characterized Archer Fjord for the first time. Student's Lauren O'Reilly and Liam Jasperse joined for sampling Foxe Basin on Leg 4!
Our group was funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada for Ship Time to sample the Northwest Passage this year. The research mission was dubbed RADCARBBS (Radiocarbon Distributions and Carbon Cycling between Baffin Bay and the Beaufort Sea).
Our group participated on a research cruise to Baffin Bay in the summer of 2019. Our work was focused on understanding both the ventillation age of Baffin Bay, and using 14C as a tracer for organic matter cycling in this rapidly changing Arctic region.
Our group is excited to be working with the NMR facility at uOttawa in unraveling the mysteries of DOM composition in the ocean. We are very thankful for the expertise and training we have received from Facility manager Dr. Glenn Facey - who also has a wonderfully resourceful NMR blog!
