Vision: ...to pair every newly hired librarian with a seasoned Mentor
...to recruit and train experienced certified school librarians to be effective mentor-coaches for new school librarians in Vermont.

...to develop a framework for continuing professional learning and sustainability of the program
46 seasoned school librarians from all areas of Vermont have been trained in the past two years. Emphasis in the training is on mentors as growth agents, and implementing national school library standards. The roster will continue to grow with the third cohort in summer 2022. A link to the current roster is included below. The goal is to have at least one trained school librarian in every school district by 2023. These mentors will be available to mentor new school librarians now and in the future.
28 Mentees have been paired with mentors during the past two years. In year one, only one person left the field. Some mentors have two mentees.
6 Regional coordinators for the grant use regional databases to track placement of school librarians in each school district. They monitor retirements, openings listed on School Spring, and follow up with schools to reach out to offer mentors for the new hires. Turnover in positions in the past few years averages around 15 to 20 new hires a year. The VSLA regions are closely aligned to the VSA regions. The list of regional coordinators is linked below.
Zoom has provided a convenient bridge for school librarian mentors and mentees, and has facilitated ongoing monthly training meetings with mentors and regional coordinators.
Three states have expressed interest in replicating our project.
