Veritas Oratio Xaris Speech and Debate Club: Our Mission & Operational Scope
Our Mission & Geographic Reach Based in Bellevue, WA, Veritas Oratio Xaris Speech and Debate Club is a registered non-profit dedicated to fostering vital communication and critical thinking skills. We serve families from a wide geographic area—reaching as far north as Monroe, east to North Bend, west to Normandy Park, and south to Maple Valley. We empower students to master the art of effective communication, build confidence, and develop the analytical abilities necessary to thoughtfully engage with diverse perspectives.
Program Scope: Ages 12–18 To maintain the rigor required for competitive debate and complex policy analysis, our instructional programs are strictly reserved for students aged 12 to 18 (Junior High and High School). We do not offer curriculum or instruction for students under age 12.
Please note: The complexity and thematic maturity of our categories are targeted at the 15+ age level. Students are frequently required to research and discuss difficult real-world issues (e.g., criminal justice, warfare, bioethics) that require significant emotional and intellectual maturity.
Our Cooperative Model (Not a Drop-Off Program) Our non-profit operates on a fully volunteer-based, cooperative model. We are not a fee-for-service provider or a daycare facility.
Mandatory Parent Roles: To keep our programs accessible and high-quality, at least one parent from every family must remain on-site to fulfill a specific operational role (judging, administration, facilities) during every meeting.
Resource Allocation: All volunteer resources are dedicated to the education of the 12–18 age group. We do not provide childcare or supervision for younger siblings. While families are responsible for their own non-enrolled children, parents cannot be diverted from their cooperative duties to manage childcare.
Our Programs & Events
We offer enriching opportunities to practice and learn speech and debate through our structured weekly club meetings. Our programs typically include:
Summer Camps: These are intro level sessions to introduce new families the wonderful world of speech and debate, to learn the big picture and value of this program and to connect you with other like-minded families.
Weekly Lessons: Focused lessons on argumentation, research, public speaking techniques, and effective communication strategies.
Practice Rounds: Opportunities for participants to apply their learning in simulated debate and speech scenarios, receiving constructive feedback.
Mentorship: Dedicated volunteer parents provide individualized coaching and support to help each participant reach their full potential.
Community Engagement: A supportive and inclusive environment where families collaborate, learn from one another, and build lasting relationships.
We offer programs in Speech, Debate, and a Juniors program as described below. More details can be found on the Club Day page.
The speech club offers great opportunities to practice, learn, and receive feedback on eloquent speaking, speech writing, and more! These include platform, interpretive, and limited preparation categories of speeches.
The debate club offers instructions and practice on rational argumentation, logical thinking, and research. This includes team policy and values debate categories.
The Junior Club is exclusively for siblings of our high school competitors. We introduce 8–11 year-olds to speech concepts in a fun environment. It is not open for general enrollment; it is a service for existing club families only.
