Ad auctions determine which ads appear in search results, websites, or apps and in what order. It’s how platforms like Google Ads, Facebook Ads, and other ad networks decide which advertiser’s ad gets displayed to users.
Ad auctions occur in real-time whenever a user searches for something (Search Ads) or visits a website (Display Ads). The process involves the following steps:
Advertisers select keywords (for search ads) or target audiences/websites (for display ads).
They set a maximum bid amount—the most they are willing to pay for a click, impression, or conversion.
Ad rank is not just about bidding the highest amount. Most platforms consider:
✅ Bid Amount – How much the advertiser is willing to pay.
✅ Ad Quality & Relevance – Is the ad relevant to the user’s intent?
✅ Expected Click-Through Rate (CTR) – Higher CTR means better engagement.
✅ Landing Page Experience – Does the destination page provide a good experience?
Ads with the highest Ad Rank are displayed.
Ad Rank = Bid Amount × Quality Score (Google Ads formula).
The winner doesn’t always pay their max bid but just enough to outbid the next competitor.
Different platforms offer various bidding models:
Standard for Search Ads
You only pay when someone clicks on your ad.
Common for Display & Video Ads
Good for brand awareness, as you pay per 1,000 views.
You pay when a user completes a desired action (purchase, sign-up).
Requires historical data for optimization.
Uses machine learning to optimize for conversions or ROI.
Strategies: Maximize Conversions, Target CPA, Target ROAS (Return on Ad Spend).
Let’s say three advertisers are competing for the keyword "best running shoes."
Advertiser

Quality Score (1-10)
Ad Rank (Bid × Quality)
A
$3
9

B

C

Advertiser A wins, even though they bid lower than B, because of a higher Quality Score.
The actual price paid is slightly more than the next highest-ranked advertiser’s Ad Rank, ensuring fairness.
✅ Highest bid doesn’t always win – Quality matters!
✅ Better Quality Score = Lower costs & better placement.
✅ Choosing the right bidding strategy depends on your advertising goals.
