Old News & resolved issues.
CE & SOS2 always had a rocky relationship over the years, but the recent release of CE (the one you find on the Steam Workshop) was additionally problematic with many known incompatibilities based on their patches for multiple other mods simply not being up to date. While this is a whole different topic of course, the main takeaway here is the specific incompatibility between those two mods though, which immediately results in game breaking behaviour, not even letting people start a new save.
If you feel the need, you can always check the current state of CE by checking in on their own Discord where you can get more up to date versions of the mod, but as of the time writing these lines, their Steam-version (Updated: Sep. 21) is just hard incompatible with SOS2!
After a recent update to Vanilla Expanded Framework, the mod The Sims Traits - which is making use of some features from the Framework - is now causing gamebreaking errors. If you are affected by it; a 'fix-mod' made by Zaljerem is already available! Read the instructions on the mod-page and just use it until the original mod got an official update!
The error itself is rather easy to spot and identify, since it's directly thrown at startup with a distinct error-stacktrace like seen below. Ingame it can show itself with different behaviours, but typically people report not being able to generate a new game/worldmap (factions):
The RimCities update from March 17. apparently introduced a bugged, new quest. People are reporting situations where their pawn's gizmos (skills, psycasts, etc.) are vanishing, accompanied by a generic NullReferenceException error similar to the one shown below. There is a chance the issue can show up with different errors though, so investigating it typically relies on the effect (gizmos vanishing) and the fact that there currently is a quest from the mod active.
To solve the issue - until officially fixed - just abandon/archive the quest by clicking the 'trashbin' icon on the quest-page. With dev-mode ON there might be additional options, but reports suggest that just using the regular method immediately solves the issue.
With the rework-update to Vanilla Weapons Expanded the other day, there seems to be a list of problems as expected with an update of that kind. Most common are errors from other mods patching - or making use - of old VWE content, which now need to be updated accordingly to work again. One bit problem child in this case is of course Combat Extended. Some of the currently reported issues include the game failing to load save-files from before the update at all.
Part of the issues seem to be related to usual issues with Steam not updating (all) involved mods properly. So the recommended first step is to force a clean re-download of VWE, other VE-mods that updated at the same time and especially VE Framework. If that doesn't resolve the errors though, the most likely scenario is that you have to wait for mods to update accordingly to the changes. Which is typically impossible to predict any ETA for - in the case of Combat Extended we recommend joining their own Discord server for updates on the situation!
A recent update to Performance Optimizer on 31.12.2025 caused some 'right-click functionality' to break for users. The mod was already reverted back to the prior version, but as usually - if you see yourself confronted by that issue, try making a clean re-download (unsub - wait a min or two - resub) of the mod first to ensure Steam actually updated the mod properly for you!
If you're experiencing any sudden performance-issues that started after Nov. 30. and are using ReGrowth 2 on your modlist, you want to check the mod's settings and disable the newly added feature that creates 'puddles' from rain. According to some reports, the other new feature of snow piling on walls seems to have performance-issues as well, but it seems like disabling the feature in the mod's settings does in fact not suppress that impact. The author is aware of those issues and is preparing a fix but that one hasn't been deployed at least at the time us writing. We'll keep you updated!
18.12.2025 - UPDATE: Mod pushed some updates since and turning off those two features should now properly deactivate them. How much of the actual performance issue of these features was fixed is currently not known.
On top of all chaos currently going on in RimWorld's modding community, there is currently a highly problematic trend of people uploading unofficial forks for popular mods. While this is a somewhat common practice in the community, to pick up mods that were abandoned by their original authors, there is a long list of highly problematic cases this time around.
Many of those forks are either without the original author's consent, against actual software licences, not actually update by the forker, badly updated by people without relevant knowledge and often with (bad) GPT-support. Long story short, many of those mods have shown themselves with game breaking issues and should - as general recommendation - be avoided like the plague!
Since the sheer amount of those cases doesn't allow to get into too much specifics, here an incomplete list of the most commonly affected mods with links to their proper - or at least; most trusted - version available right now. Keep in mind that this is an ongoing situation and things change by the minute, so if you're in doubt; better don't use a questionable mod at all and just wait for an official update to happen. This is not a drill! In many cases switching out those mods mid-save is not an option!
Pick Up And Haul - The most problematic case. Use THIS HERE!
Replace Stuff - With the long time mod creator Uuugggg sadly passing away recently, their mods are currently split between different people to preserve and continue. For the time being, you'll find many of his works continued HERE!
Run & Gun - Ferris is working on the update for Tacticowl, better wait for that one. You find multiple continued mods (mostly mods by Owlchemist) in Ferris' good hands HERE!
High Quality Textures - Unofficial fork has serious issues. Better wait for updates to either GS+ or Performance Fish!
Medical System Expansion 2 - Not an issue with a fork but generally some gamebreaking issues right now. Since it's historically near impossible to remove from saves, hard avoid and you might as well do that in general. It is fine-ish when it works, but raises the chance of bricking your save!
Hugslib, Allow Tool, Defensive Positions and other mody by Hugs - Even the official versions of those mods are not well maintained and the few that have been updated to 1.6 are still causing issues. If you must, stick at least to the ones by Hugs (Now; Symbolic - on Steam) and avoid any forks by all means. There's an ongoing argument as to finally remove dependency from Hugslib at all, but that's too complex as to go into here. If you can though, make your modlist Hugslib-free and just don't bother with the underlying issue.
Blueprints - This one - and other mods originally by Fluffy - had problematic forks even before 1.6 and things just got worse now. Better avoid if you can.
Any fork with 'FORZADO' in its title - Hard avoid, that shit basically became a meme over night and won't do you any good. One single exception: HERE!
If you're playing RimWorld on MacOS and run into issues, make sure to check your log and see if Harmony itself is actually initializing. There's currently an issue with the latest Harmony version not loading properly for users on MacOS. Look out for the message; "Error while instantiating a mod of type HarmonyMod.HarmonyMain" to see if you're affected.
The solution (or just precaution when running the game on MacOS) is to use this version of Harmony instead. Optionally, running the game through Rosetta seems to bypass the issue as well. We recommend keeping an eye on the case even after switching to the alternative Harmony version, just in case something changes and the original Harmony gets updated with the fix included.
Thanks to Samboy (Ludeon) for bringing this to the attention of the community!
UPDATE: Issue has since been fixed and the latest Steam WS version of Harmony has those fixes now included as well. So make sure to swap back to the regular version again, to not run into different issues later when the mod gets further updates!
Confirmed by Altered Carbon 2's author, Elite Bionics Framework patches are severely failing, causing game breaking errors. No known workaround or fix until those patches were fixed/updated which hasn't happened so far. Since EBF is long known to be quite a performance burden and can be a ticking timebomb breaking setups even mid-through if a mod it patches updates, we highly recommend not using EBF anymore in this day and age to begin with.
As Ludeon Devs confirmed earlier, there is currently a not fully understood issue with 1.6 on systems using a GeForce GTX 1060 6GB vRAM (EDIT: As multiple sources confirmed, the issue is affecting other GPUs as well!) causing errors like; "D3D11: Failed to create RenderTexture" or; "d3d11: failed to create 2D texture shader resource" - as a solution, affected users can use -disable-compute-shaders as a startup parameter.
Update:
15.07.2025 - As of July 12. Ludeon implemented a temporary fix for Steam users. Starting the game through Steam now automatically adds the startup parameter. All other users can still add it themselves using the regular ways (File-shortcut, setting it in RimPy/RimSort, etc.) Ludeon also announced to have a permanent/proper fix for it shortly.
A recent update to Vanilla Expanded Framework introduced issues with a list of other mods. The full list of affected mods and inner workings is still investigated, but here's what is known so far, including a partial fix for one case.
Mods confirmed to be affected are currently:
Other mods (CE, Hospitality, Allies Are Helpful - still unconfirmed though) which can be potentially affected by it tend to be related to melee combat at the very least but those above are confirmed. For users of Search & Destroy it is generally recommended to switch to is successor Tacticowl to begin with.
UPDATE!
18.3.2025 - the Steam version of Tacticowl has been updated with the fix. Make sure to force Steam to update properly!
4.4.2025 - there are reports that the mentioned Tacticowl update caused new issues, potentially in connection with another mod. It results in social fights between pawns leading to melee-attacks being applied comically fast. Author/Maintainer is aware and looking for a fix.
23.4.2025 - recent patch to Tacticowl should have fixed the remaining issue as well!
2.7.2025 - after months of observation, there don't seem to be many instances of this issue left. Most mods seems to have been fixed. If the error will show up with 1.6 again, we'll update this info of course, but all signs hint that it can be considered resolved and this post will now go archived.
As an easy tell, if you're affected by this specific issue, you can check your logs for errors like this. It usually is caused by an animal but doesn't seem to be restricted to it.
The telling parts are the errors around Pawn_StanceTracker and ReachabilityImmediate.
