Little Shop of Horrors is a fantastic piece of theatre. This Horror comedy rock musical hits all the marks. Horror is bloody, with lots of laughs, the actors are great, music and songs get you right into the scene. This production was first released as a Black and white B movie, then later turned into a colour film released in 1986 starring Rick Moranis as Seymour a young man lonely for love working in a Skid Row flower Shop. Seymour is in love with Audrey the flower shop assistant although Audrey already has a boyfriend that isn’t very nice to her. Seymour comes across a lovely little plant which he buys to bring back to the flower shop, as it happens the plant turns out to be a human blood-eating plant that will not survive without it.
This colorful film has its set, and costumes designed around the 1950s era and filmed like it is on stage or in a theatre production.
I find this film version one of my favorites of all time due to some of the funniest songs which include Feed Me and Suddenly Seymour. Steve Martin as Audrey’s evil dentist boyfriend dances and sings his way around the stage- screen with ease. Some of the lyrics of Feed Me sung by the plant are, The Kinda Sticky Licky Sweets, Feed Me, and Take a Chance, just feed me and you know the kinda Eats, The kinda red hot treats I crave, referring to the human food he requires. The song Suddenly Seymour talks about Seymour being lonely and following anyone that comes along with lyrics such as Nobody ever treated me kindly, Daddy left early, Mama was poor, I'd meet a man and I'd follow him blindly, He'd snap his fingers, me, I'd say sure.
The film grossed $39 million at the box office, which, from the viewpoint of the studio, was considered an underperformer, however it became a smash hit upon its home video release in 1987 on VHS and Beta tapes. The production has been on Broadway all over the world many times and is still a colourful funny musical that you won’t want to miss.
