In this project, I searched for 2 credible articles focusing on information security and identity theft
This article tells of Meri-Tuuli Auer, who was one of ~30,000 Finnish therapy patients who had their medical records stolen. In 2020, a hacker threatened patients by blackmailing them with their therapists' notes, which included the most sordid details of their lives. Tragically, lots of the data was released online, despite the blackmailers' "promise" (Kleeman, 2026).
This breach is one of the largest crimes in Finnish history. It ruined many people's faith in therapy, and it is rumored that some victims later killed themselves.
Eventually, Julius Kivimäki, known criminal, was arrested and sentenced to 6< years in prison. Despite the verdict, the stolen records continue to circulate online, leaving victims permanently exposed.
Meri- Tuuli Auer, the woman who spoke to BBC, was able to reclaim control of the narrative through her book, Everyone Gets to Know.

In 2025, ransomware hit a record high, a "58% year-over year increase in victims" (Alder,2026). This study focused on findings at GuidePoint Security, a U.S. IT Security company. It showed that at GuidePoint Security alone, there were 2,287 individual victims during the fourth quarter of 2025.
Police have been catching a "notable" number of hackers, but this has little effect on the massive overall problem.
They have been caught through methods of breaking apart different bubbles, if you will, of the internet, making it easier to find these perpetrators.
There have been many large malware groups:
Qilin, INC Ransom, SafePay, Sinobi
