Similarly, what are some the factors that we use to assess the education of children for a population in the world?
For our visualizations we take literacy rates, government spending as a % of GDP on education and children actually attending school as our defining factors.
Government Expenditure as % of GDP
One of the major factors in deciding education of region is going to be how much importance is the government of that region is giving to the education of their country. Since education is a major factor for development of a country, we are able to see through our visualization that more %GDP is spent by governments of more developed countries such as Cuba when compared to other under-developed countries. One anomaly that can be noticed in this is that since this is a calculation of % of GDP we can say that countries such as Mozambique although have lower GDP pump in more resources towards their education system.
We have also added a filter in our visualization to explain for primary and secondary level education expenditures by governments.
Lesser expenditure can be attributed to newer countries such as Gabon because of the age of their government and might take some more time to develop.
Literacy rates
In this case sadly we don not have data for some the more developed countries such as US, UK and other countries in Europe. From the visualizations we do see that some developed Asian countries and some eastern European countries such as Armenia and Estonia have a almost 100% literacy rate. On the lower spectrum we see that countries in the African subcontinent have a lower literacy rate. This might be attributed to the poverty rates and lack of healthcare as a major issue in these regions.
Another thing to note is that more developed countries with very large GDPs have overall less spend on education although it might be a larger amount.
Over the years we also see a massive spike in literacy rates throughout the world in the 1970s which might be linked to economical in many countries which are considered superpowers today such as Japan and Russia.
How many school aged children are out of school?
In this visualization we aim to visualize at a country level how much of the school aged population of the country are currently out of school. Something we notice that well developed countries like Singapore and New Zealand have a lower rate. We see a higher out of school children in poorer countries like Somalia and Afghanistan. These can be attributed to unstable governments or school aged children being employed in other industries due to poverty.
