My internship is taking place at IU Health Physicians which happens to be the largest network of physicians in the state of Indiana. IUHP works in partnership with IU School of medicine to provide a blend of training, research, and quality care. Our mission here is to treat a person as a whole and not just their individual symptoms
During my internships at IUHP, I mostly shadowed the Vice-Chair of Clinical Operations and assisted with a solution-based project. My project was to find a way we could improve our kidney dialysis billing process. In order to complete this project, I had to collaboratively work with the Service Line Administrator and Administrative Assistant for Kidney Health.
Learning Objectives
How to complete a solution-based project
Be present and ask questions during meetings
Learn about healthcare operations
Report issues and information relevant to the Vice-Chair of Clinical Operations
Throughout my time at IU Health Physicians I have been able to strengthen my skills and have developed new ones. Knowing how to work with others and utilize their strengths has been a challenging yet amazing experience. Being a team player is crucial when completing projects and I have learned the importance of that during my time in this role. If it were not for the rest of the team and their unique areas of expertise I could have known how to complete a project, such as the one I was assigned. I have also further developed my written communication skills during this experience. One skill I would love to further develop is public speaking. I want to be a leader in healthcare but the ability to speak loudly and confidently to my team does not come easy to me. I hope to develop that skill more in the future as I move on to higher roles.
At IU Health my day-to-day activities tend to vary. I spend a lot of time joining huddles for the Department of Medicine where they discuss long-term goals and milestones they have hit in the process. I also have mentor meetings with the Vice-Chair of Clinical Operations where I am able to discuss how to navigate projects with different leaders. I have two projects I consistently work on one being for kidney dialysis billing and the other being a project for gastroenterology privileges. Working on both of these has been challenging but also insightful as it is helping me build my collaborations skills.
