Overview:
The Art & Design question paper is worth 60 marks and assesses your knowledge of artists, designers, and how social and cultural contexts influence their work. The paper is divided into two sections, each worth 30 marks:
Section 1: Expressive Art Studies
Section 2: Design Studies
You will be answering a total of six questions in two hours. Your responses will need to reflect your understanding of art and design elements, as well as your ability to analyze unseen artworks or designs.
In this section, you will answer three questions:
1 mandatory question (10 marks)
2 optional questions (10 marks each)
The mandatory question will ask you to explain elements of an artwork you have studied. It will include three specific prompts, such as:
Use of materials or techniques
Mood and atmosphere, one other visual element
Social and cultural influences
For the optional questions, you will be given unseen artworks to analyze. Examples of topics could include:
Colour
Composition
Techniques
Mood and atmosphere
Symbolism
Your goal is to demonstrate your understanding of the artistic methods used, how external influences shaped the work, and to analyze the artwork using appropriate art vocabulary.
This section follows the same format as Section 1, but focuses on design:
1 mandatory question (10 marks)
2 optional questions (10 marks each)
The mandatory question will ask you to explain elements of a design you have studied. Prompts might cover:
Function or use of materials
Aesthetics
Social and cultural influences
For the optional questions, you will analyze unseen design works. Design topics could include:
Aesthetics
Functionality
Target audience
Materials
Again, you’ll need to explain how design elements are used, the impact of external influences, and analyze the design using appropriate terminology.
When answering any question, follow this structure:
What?
Identify a relevant feature of the artwork or design.
Where or How?
Describe where it can be seen in the work or how it’s applied.
Why?
Discuss the effect or reason for its use.
