How to Build a New Case
Create your own Google Slide "room" for any case you would like to run.
Follow these easy steps.
Step by Step
1.
Choose or write your case
Before you start, check to see if a case has already been created for the VRR.
If not: see if a case is already published on: https://emsimcases.com/.
If you need to start from scratch: you can use resources like First10EM, Life in the Fast Lane, Don’t Forget the Bubbles, or EMCases to help you write your case.
I like to use this simple template to keep the case easy to read and use for our facilitators. You could also try using the EM Sim Cases template.
2.
Create your Google Slide "Room"
Go to Google Slides website. Click + sign to create blank document.
Tip: We recommend creating a 2nd document for your rough work, creation of slide backgrounds, etc.
3.
Use already created slides
Look at "Ready to Run" Cases: See if there are similar cases already made that you can use as example or to borrow slides from.
Building Blocks: Use this slideset to see inventory of slides that have already been created for the VRR (including: meds, airway slides, procedures, physical exam, POCUS, glidescope videos, etc).
Choose the slide you would like to use - Copy this Slide (right click over slide in thumbnail, then select copy) - Paste into your document.
4.
Create new slides
This is the fun and creative part - you can add gifs, videos, photos, audio, etc! Some tips:
Create "slide background": The background layer is the non-modifiable image that includes everything you don't want learners to be able to interact with. To create slide backgroudn:
Create the background you would like in another slide.
Take screenshot of slide (Mac: command - shift-4-select area). This will save as image.
Insert this image as slide background in room. Slide - Change Background - Choose image.
Cover this backgroudn with all the "moveable" parts (textboxes, images of monitors, rhythm strips, etc).
Gifs: This will be a continuously playing image. Can easily convert video into gif using website like this. Add gifs and images by clicking and dragging onto slide, or using insert - image - choose.
Videos and Audio: Import into Google Drive. Change share settings to "anyone with link to edit". Then insert into Google Slides (insert - video - choose from drive).
5.
Finishing Touches
Final Check: Cross reference your case to ensure you have all the appropriate phsyical exam findings, investigations, rhythm strips, etc.
Hide any spoilers: Add grey boxes to cover up anything you don't want learners to see right away (ex: exam findings, test results, etc).
Name your Google Slide Document: Make sure slideset is titled something generic (like "Case A") and not the diagnosis (like "Hyponatremia").
Save unused case: When the room is finalized, save it. Click File → Version History → Name Current Version (ex: "Unused Case".
Share Settings: Make sure "anyone with link can edit" so your learners can interact with document. Click Share (Top Right) → General Access → Anyone with the Link → Can Edit.
6.
Consider sharing your work!
If you are comfortable, we would love to post your new room on this website for other educators.
