VI - Sharing DIGITAL PLACES

In this section:

◉ We will learn how to export our digital places so others can explore them on their computers.

◉ We will learn how to archive our projects on Google Drive so we and others can access them in the future.

◉ We will review screencasting, and record our experiences in our own and in others' digital places.

Big Idea: Walking through a place is an experience that can be shared in multiple, different ways. These include inviting other people to walk through the place (e.g. by sharing your digital place online) or by recording your experience walking through a place (e.g. by screencapturing a walkthrough of your world and sharing that).

exporting an executable file of your project

An "executable" file is a program that can run on another computer by itself, without having to be opened using another program. By exporting an executable, you can share your project with people, even if they don't have Unity installed. Follow the tutorial below to export a Mac and/or Windows executable of your project.

archiving and sharing your DIGITAL PLACE

You've made a version of your project that can be shared with others - now it's time to share it. Read through the tutorial below to "zip" your project into an archive and upload it to share. When I teach Crafting Digital Places, students usually upload their projects to Google Drive to share. But you (or your class) might have another place where files are kept.

If you want to share your executables more widely, itch.io is a free site where anyone can open an account and share or sell their games. It's a bit like YouTube for games!

SCREENCASTING AND SHARINg YOUR DIGITAL PLACE

Some people may not be able to visit your world directly because they don't have a system that can run an executable (like, a phone, tablet, or Chromebook). We're also going to record a video "walkthrough" of your world that will make it easy to share with friends, family, and others. If you want, and if your caretakers allow, you might even share your video on YouTube or other social media.

If you need a refresher, the tutorial on screen-capturing with OBS is linked below.

After you record your walkthrough video, you can archive that on Google Drive, as well.

Then, take some time to visit other peoples' digital places! Record your experiences in them - will you be surprised, scared, delighted, curious...?
