Though the microbiome has recently become a trendy research focus, the microbiota of the ocean are not well characterized despite comprising some of the most abundant organisms on the planet. Even more poorly understood are the bacteriophages and viruses that co-habituate with these organisms at deep sea depths. A study within the past year presented genome sequences of viruses at both 1,000m and 3,000m (bathypelagic) in the ocean. This report identified 99 divergent phage genomes. We plan to act the part of ‘data parasites’ and use these recently discovered viral genomes and utilize data mining techniques to identify novel proteins. In particular, we plan to focus our efforts on searching for novel peptides within this data set.
