About Me

I am originally from Marlton, NJ and I am a proud product of New Jersey K-12 public education. I grew up in a school where I was often the only Black student in the classroom, and my family was the only Black family on our very white block in our very white neighborhood.

My experiences being "the only one" led me to the work that I do today. I left New Jersey to attend undergrad at the College of Charleston in Charleston, SC. I began my journey as an educator teaching fifth and sixth grade math and science at Cane Bay Middle School in Summerville, SC after graduating from undergrad. After completing my masters in curriculum and instruction from Western Governors University, I moved to the Seattle, WA area in 2018 with the love of my life, Kourtney. We got married in New Orleans, LA in November of 2019.

Since leaving South Carolina my career has pivoted to focusing on K-12 mathematics instruction with research on decolonizing mathematics curriculum for teachers and learners, creating inclusive STEM environments, and using technology to bridge equity gaps in STEM education. I also write curriculum, with my cornerstone curriculum being Probability and Statistics through an Anti-racist and Equity Lens, and an additional course in Social Justice in Mathematics.

In my new role as a STEM coach I focus specifically on using project based learning as a vehicle for equity, infusing STEM into classrooms, using technology to bridge equity gaps in education, and constructing curriculum with an anti-racist lens. A highlight of 2020 for me was being involved in the African American Studies Workgroup for Washington State, a curriculum committee focused on incorporating African American Studies into K-12 curriculum across the state of Washington. Information about this committee can be found here.

In addition to coaching and leading seminars on deconstructing STEM curriculum and making STEM more inclusive in the K-12 education space, I am very active in the world of educational technology. I am a certified Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert (MIEE), a National Geographic Educator, an Apple Educator, an InsPEARational Educator, a Buncee Ambassador, and an educational technology consultant for tech companies in the Seattle area and beyond. I've had the pleasure of working for companies such as Pear Deck and Mathshare, and consulting for companies such as Microsoft in their global education marketing department. I have also presented at conferences such as ISTE, Impact Education, and CUE.

In 2020 my wife and I decided to take our equity and anti-racism efforts even further and lean into philanthropy for Black and indigenous students of color. We started the Thompson-Johnson Scholarship for Teacher Education at my undergrad alma mater, the College of Charleston. More information about our story and the scholarship can be found here.
