The role I spent the most time on while at CanBav was inside staking processed material from the tail end of the molder, end-matcher, or sander and packaging the final product. We made a variety of products, from S4S baseboard, crown molding, structural timbers, decking, siding, hardwood and engineered flooring.
While working with the molder I had to make fast-paced quality assessments on each board, ensuring that the final product matched company and customer standers. We used the standard wood grading rubric both in the shop and out in the yard. I was able to understand the rubric quickly which made me a valuable member of the team who was able to shift to different roles as needed.
During my second summer, I helped to grade dry lumber on the green chain sorting belt. During this time the usual operator was away, and I helped to train two new employees. This role was intimidating for someone who had technically only been on the job for 2.5 months and was 17 years old, but my supervisor was confident in my ability.
This confidence and trust moved me into the shop. I operated a machine for making interlocking hardwood floor, this job was often done solo or with a new employee for training purposes. This role gave me some level of independence.
There are many roles I was a part of at CanBav, some others that I will not go into much detail on are: wood bracket packaging, painted siding packaging, utility crate building.
In the summer of 2022 I worked in all positions at this locally owned and operated Victoria business. I interacted with customers daily, as a cashier and through balloon orders; Stocked shelves; Opened and closed the store; Trained new staff members.
The owners and managers of this store put a lot of faith in me after only working here for a short period. I had a key and was closing the shop after only one week, and was training staff after three.
In the end, I choose to leave this job to focus on my school responsibilities and manage my work load without the pressure of being responsible for covering shifts and closing the store.
Every fall before term starts, UVic hosts a new student welcome to get students familiar with campus and welcome them to the Vikes community. When I was a new student in 2018 new student welcome helped introduce me to people in the engineering department and gave me one friend to who I could say "hi" during the business of first-year classes. So during the fall 2019 and 2022, and spring 2020 I volunteered my time for new student orientation.
The role was pretty simple, give a tour of the campus, and answer students' questions about campus and university programs.

During this time I directed tourists and visitors to the Island to local attractions, made camping reservations, and curated relevant fliers and brochures for their advantages.
I had only been living on the Island for a week before I had to become an expert on attractions and destinations. As a geographic learning experience, this opportunity was pretty cool.
