AKA Vicky The Real Artist
Victoria, is an Indigenous artist, pyrography specialist, and visual storyteller. Based in Oshawa, Ontario she seeks to honour her Mi’kmaq, Métis, Scottish, French and Anishinaabe ancestry through her artistic journey. Her works reflect the many influences that have shaped her identity, creative journey, and connection to the natural world.
A self-taught artist with a particular passion for pyrography and canoe paddle art, Vicky brings together traditional Indigenous artistic influences and contemporary expression. Her distinctive visual style draws inspiration from Métis floral designs, Mi’kmaq forms, Woodland-style imagery, to create works of contemporary and abstract design. Working primarily with wood, paint, and mixed media, she creates pieces that celebrate the flora and fauna of Turtle Island while exploring themes of culture, identity, wildlife, stewardship, and intergenerational knowledge.
Vicky’s work ranges from detailed woodburned animal portraits and floral compositions to hand-painted canvas and functional art. Each piece reflects her passion in the relationship between people, animals, and the land. Her original designs have been featured in exhibitions, public art projects, and commissioned works throughout Durham Region and beyond. Notable accomplishments include exhibiting at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery and Woodland Cultural Centre, Kawartha Art Gallery, Station Gallery, Neilson Park Creative Centre. He works have contributed to Toronto’s popular One of a Kind Show, the Town of Whitby’s permanent Downie Wenjack Legacy Space, creating a permanent Indigenous art installation for a Pickering Loblaws location, and completing a six-paddle commission for the Assembly of First Nations Chiefs Electoral Candidates.
Beyond her studio practice, Vicky is passionate about making art accessible and creating opportunities for others to discover their own creativity. Through beginner-friendly workshops, she teaches pyrography, painting, traditional-inspired crafts, and other hands-on art practices to children, youth, families, and community groups. Her work with schools, libraries, cultural organizations, galleries, and community programs allows her to share artistic skills while encouraging cultural learning, self-expression, and meaningful connections through creativity.
As co-founder of Ishkode — Indigenous Art Collective and Workshops, Vicky also supports the growth and visibility of Indigenous artists and makers. The collective provides opportunities for Indigenous creatives to share their work, develop their skills, and connect with the wider community through art, workshops, and collaborative initiatives.
For Vicky, success extends beyond the finished artwork. It is found in the knowledge shared, the confidence fostered in emerging artists, the stories carried forward, and the opportunities created for the next generation.
