During the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic, soldiers were treated for influenza primarily through supportive care, focusing on rest and nursing to manage symptoms. As there was no effective antiviral treatment or antibiotics to combat secondary bacterial infections, the focus was on alleviating discomfort and preventing complications.

In 1918, a significant number of soldiers were treated for tuberculosis  during World War I. Estimates suggest that 10,000 recruits with T.B. served on active duty, and another 5,000 were diagnosed with the disease during wartime. T.B. was a leading cause of discharge for disability, accounting for 13.5% of all discharges.
