In this post I'll detail a lesson plan showcasing possible uses for the digital tools that have been analysed in the previous post (EzyGraph and SlidesGo's AI Presentation Maker).
Age group: 15-16 y.o.
Language level: B1+
Number of Students: 15
Physical location: classroom
Materials: Blackboard, Printed infographic, TV screen
Duration: 60 minutes
Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
revise descriptive adjectives and uses of the past tenses
identify the parts and structure of a short story
apply the "show, don't tell" method technique in writing
write the first draft of a short story
Warm-up (7'): Teacher hands out photocopies of a short story. Teacher asks Students to read and underline:
Adjectives (3')
In pairs (or groups of three), Students label the story parts (Beginning - Conflict - Ending). (2')
Students and Teacher go over the answers together (3')
Short Story:
It was a cold, dark evening when Emma heard a strange noise. Curious and a little scared, she walked slowly towards the kitchen. The lights were off, but she saw a shadow moving. Her heart beat faster.
"Hello?" she whispered.
Suddenly, the lights turned on.
"Surprise!" her friends shouted, all were smiling and laughing.
Emma couldn't believe it - they had planned a surprise birthday party for her. She smiled, feeling happy and a bit silly for being scared.
Pre-Task:
1. Presentation (10'): Teacher goes through the key notions of writing a short story using the presentation made with SlidesGo's AI Presentation Maker, which includes parts of a story, use of tenses and key phrases they can use, alongside "show, don't tell" technique.
2. Infographic (3'): After discussing "Show, don't tell", T sticks on the board the infographic made using EzyGraph showing different ways of writing certain emotions. Teacher and students go through it briefly.
(Infograph made from https://creativepromptsforwriting.tumblr.com/post/689038358087860224/how-to-show)
Task (30'): Teacher tells the Students to write the first draft of their own short story, following certain guidelines. Teacher encourages Students to check the infographic for reference if needed.
Write a clear beginning, middle, and end
Use at least one "show, don't tell" technique
Must start with the prompt "It was the first time I had ever felt truly afraid... What happened next changed everything." (100-120 words)
Closure (10'): As a student gathers the papers for the Teacher to collect, the Teacher asks students to discuss in small groups of two or three some items she writes on the board (5'):
What's one challenge you've faced while writing?
One thing/element you'd like to improve from your story.
Afterwards, Teacher elicits a few answers from groups to share with the whole class (3'). Teacher asks students for possible solutions to the different problems students have mentioned (2').
