You are now wondering, how do I use them in my lessons? Well, here I will show you and example of a lesson plan for fifth graders in a bilingual school. They are working with toys vocabulary, and for this lesson the focus is on what materials they are made of and the properties of each material.
Source: Screenshoot taken from the worksheet
Lesson plan: "What are my toys made of?"
Duration: 40–45 minutes
Tools Used:
Diffit for Teachers (custom reading text)
Interacty (interactive matching game)
Students will also be asked to bring a toy from home.
Opening (5 minutes)
The teacher will ask students to place their toys on their desks. Then, she will ask "Are they all the same? Are any toys similar" "What is the difference between Lucias's teddy and Tomi's car?". The idea is to elicit the words plastic, fabric, big, small, soft, hard, etc.
Development (30 minutes)
Then, students will be given a handout with a text created with Diffit. We will first read the text, and then work on the vocabulary in it. We will highlight key words (materials and properties). While highlighting we will find in the classroom some objects made of the materials mentioned.
Then, they will answer some multiple choice comprehension questions found in the handout.
To continue with, after having answered, we will create a list of those materials and properties on the board.
Next, we will play a wordwall game to keep revising the vocabulary.
Closing (5 minutes)
Finally, as a closing activity, students will play in teams a matching game created in Interacty. The team that completes it in the less time wins.
