What is the Disadvantages and Advantages of Braille Keyboard?
Advantage - speed. I can rattle in full grade 2 code far faster then I could ever do on a QWERTY keyboard.
Disadvantages - need to learn Braille in order to use one. And in order to check ones output
Noise. Compared to a computer keyboard, a Perkins mechanical Brailler sounds like the clatterwheels of destruction. With two or more in a room in use, you can forget trying to have a conversation.
Alternatively there are electronic devices such as “braille’n Speak” which is a pocket sized Braille word processor, which is far and away the best and fastest note taker I’ve ever used. Virtually silent, too. Braille is fast because it is essentially a form of shorthand in that it employs large numbers of contracted forms, which reduces the number of keystrokes needed from uncontracted text by a significant factor. Also the machine only has six character-assembling keys and a space key. Commands are given by coded combinations of space key plus dot- keys.
