Case: Beth is an extraordinary pharmacist. She is also a very devoted Catholic who opposes abortion and some kinds of birth control. Her state does not have a conscience clause in its pharmacy administrative code, nor does it require a duty to dispense. Her employer must therefore decide whether Beth should be given the right to refuse to perform certain services based on her religious objections. In the absence of any other considerations, Beth's employer, Joan, is inclined to grant Beth the right to refuse. However, Joan is concerned that if Beth is given a religious exemption, other employees will cite ethical objections to health worker vaccine mandates, and Joan is unwilling to grant exemptions in those cases.
Group Work:
1- Identify the values that are at stake in this case.
2- Identify two options that a healthcare leader could choose in this case.
3- Make the best argument you can for the first option.
4- Make the best argument you can for the second option.
5- With your group, assign one person to defend the first option, one person to defend the second option, and one person to moderate the dispute. At least 5 minutes discussing the options. Then, after at least 5 minutes of listening, each participant should spend 1 minute communicating their decision to the group and spend at least 1 minute actively listening and engaging with disagreement.
