Case: Maggie is an experienced cardiologist who has had an unusually high success rate with a relatively newly approved stent. The manufacturer has invited Maggie to present her techniques and reflections on the stent at a medical conference in Miami. They ask only that Maggie truthfully report her experiences with the new stent so that other people can learn to have comparably good results. As compensation for Maggie's time, the manufacturer will pay her $10,000, in addition to her registration, travel, and accommodation expenses. Maggie is reluctant to go to the conference though, because her hospital has a conflict of interest policy that requires her to disclose relationships with manufacturers. Maggie is worried that if she is required to subsequently disclose her relationship with the manufacturer, that her patients will be less likely to trust her recommendations.
Group Work:
1- Identify the values that are at stake in this case.
2- Identify two options that a healthcare leader could choose in this case.
3- Make the best argument you can for the first option.
4- Make the best argument you can for the second option.
5- With your group, assign one person to defend the first option, one person to defend the second option, and one person to moderate the dispute. At least 5 minutes discussing the options. Then, after at least 5 minutes of listening, each participant should spend 1 minute communicating their decision to the group and spend at least 1 minute actively listening and engaging with disagreement.
