Kazakhstan has a rich and diverse musical tradition that reflects its nomadic heritage and cultural influences from various ethnic groups. Traditional Kazakh music is deeply rooted in the nomadic way of life, featuring instruments, melodies, and themes that have evolved over centuries. The Kazakh national tale about the celestial, supernatural origins of music and singing extends back to the beginning of time. It is said that once upon a time, a divine song flew high in the sky over the huge steppe of Kazak nomads and sank extremely low to the earth, and therefore the nation that heard it is endowed with immense musical talent and ability by nature. People also say, "From the moment of his birth, God bestowed a particle of Kyuya on the soul of every Kazakh."
The Akyns are professional singers who excel at versification and poetic improvisation, as well as playing the dombra as an accompaniment instrument. They do not generally compose new tunes, nor are they expected to do so, and would most likely be turned down if they did, but they modify and embellish the existing tunes to the best of their abilities. The Akyn also performs songs in various genres such as lyrics and historical using developed strophic forms. Kazakhs refer to the epic story as jr and the storyteller as jrsi.
