Our Workshops

WORKSHOPS

Students need to be at the Theatre at 9 am Workshops and rehearsals will commence at 10:30 am. The focus this year is the students - giving them an opportunity to:

  • Meet each other

  • Dance with each other in workshops

  • Experience different dance styles/teachers

  • Watch each other in both rehearsals

  • And learn from each other

We are really keen to develop the dance community among our youth!

We have completed fundraising to make these workshops and tickets (to watch) available for our students.

The overall mission is to introduce participants to traditional and modern (“club”) dance movements of west, central, east, and southern Africa. There are African based dances and religious modalities that permeate Caribbean and South American ethnic groups and cultures that will be physicalized as well. I intend to educate and share knowledge on different diaspora dance forms and styles. Overall, we will have fun and share in an exchange of dance.

Can all students that are wanting to do this workshop please bring along a water bottle and a lava lava,(sarong) yes that is including boys.

2021 Latin Jive "Partner-focus"

Workshop 3 with Keith Adolph

Latin Jive is a fun partner dance that takes its dance moves from many other dance genres. There are over 300 sequences as well as numerous drops.

Keith will be teaching the two basic sequences that when mastered provides the couple with the key to master the rest. He will also teach one drop.

Shoes with a smooth sole, bare feet or socks would help the dancers move

WORKSHOPS FROM PAST YEARS

2019 Bellydance - Greta Tapper - Ever wanted to learn the beautiful art of belly-dance? Professional dancer, teacher and artist Greta tapper is going to perform 3 different styles of belly dancing. A great way of keeping physically and mentally fit.

Amongst Greta’s other talents is her love of art and the way it can inspire and move you. Greta has been teaching for 15 years and performing for 10 years. She will have you shimmying and shaking in a supportive and encouraging environment.

2019 Inspire Yoga - Bex Deva Rebecca ('Bex') Deva was born to dance. 'It fills me with loads of energy and helps me feel connected to source,' she explains. She also discovered African drumming and dance at the age of 15 – and she has been passionate about music and movement ever since.

Bex went along to her first Nia class in Christchurch in 2006, and fell in love with the sensory-based movement practice that draws from the martial, dance and healing arts. She completed the inaugural New Zealand White Belt Nia teacher-training program in 2008 and has since gone on to train as a Green and Blue Belt and recently completed the 52 Moves training.

2019 Salsa - Neil brings more than a decade of salsa dancing to this workshop. Would you like to surprise fellow school mates at the ball this year? Impress them with a few simple moves! Come to this workshop and learn to move to the Latin beat of salsa.

Neil has been teaching adults to dance LA style salsa here in Nelson for 5 years now. The workshop will teach the basic rhythm and foot work for LA style salsa. The emphasis will be on fun . There will be some pointers on how to partner dance and I will also teach a short shine ( so that you can show off your moves without a partner ). Bring your dance shoes, a positive attitude and a smile
