Participatory Science is scientific research conducted by anyone. It could be your grandma, your neighbor, or even you! It can be done by an individual, or it can be done in a group. Although most people do not wear white lab coats, they can still contribute to real research through the many avenues of participatory science. Whether you are taking local water samples or classifying images online, YOU can make a difference in science!
The more common term for this avenue of science is called "citizen science." However, this class at the Summer Residential Governor's School is called "Participatory Science". The reason behind this change is more than just a name change; it's a change to better allow individuals to feel included in this large and diverse scientific community. In 2023, the term "citizen science" was reevaluated and replaced with terms including "community science" and "participatory science" due to concerns about inclusivity and the potentially exclusionary nature of the word "citizen". Many institutions and organizations are adopting these alternative terms to better reflect the diverse and inclusive nature of public participation in scientific research and pursuits.
