This artifact is a quick check that was used in math class during the multiplication unit. During this unit the students learned the different multiplication methods that they can use to solve single digit by multi-digit multiplication problems. The students solved the same problem in four different ways by using the distributive property, partial products, area model as well as the standard algorithm. The students were also given the opportunity to show higher ordered thinking by writing a word problem and solving it using one of the methods that they feel confident in. The students are assessed using a grading scale of 1-4. 1 showing that they do not have a strong understanding of the learning content, 2 being that they are showing some understanding, 3 shows that the student understands and can show a majority of the content and a shows that the student went above and beyond showing their learning and understanding of the content.
The Illinois Flipgrid project connects to the ITPS standard 7 the competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The Illinois Flipgrid project was an online technology based learning opportunity for the students. This project allowed the students to show their learning and understanding of the state of Illinois in a news broadcast format on Flipgrid. Students were provided resources, detailed instructions as well as technology resources such as Flipgrid to use in order to complete the project. The students took responsibility for their own learning by researching Illinois and organizing the information they found into bullet points. Once the students found all the information needed, they created a script that they would use to follow when it was time to record the news broadcast. In my example I chose to report on the state of Alabama to show the students an example of the final project.
The Illinois broadcast was used as an assessment of the students learning which connects to ITPS standard 7 because it allowed me to monitor student progress, differentiate instruction as needed as well as evaluate the students learning outcomes and monitor their growth in school and their confidence with using online resources and tools.
