Workshop

Principal organizer.

Queen's University, May 11-12, 2018.

This workshop was aimed primarily at graduate students. It served, among other purposes, to showcase some of the various aspects of number theory and related topics. While participation was open to all genders, women and minority genders were actively encouraged to participate, as attendees and as speakers.

Four established women mathematicians gave expository talks on their research. In addition, over twenty five junior participants gave 20-minute talks on a topic of their interest. A novel feature of the workshop was a presentation by a psychologist specializing in math education, math research, and surrounding problems. The faculty and administrative staff joined us for the presentation, this led to a lively discussion on issues such as stereotype threat, math anxiety and impostor syndrome. The presentation was followed the next day by an informal panel discussion on professional development, led by the plenary speakers. Registered participants were given the opportunity to submit their questions for the panel ahead of time, via an online form, with the option of anonymous submission.
