The overall project progress was completed under budget but there were many unanticipated delays that put the project behind schedule. The schedule and budget costs along with the SPI and EVA numbers are explained further below:
Schedule
At the start of the project, things were on track and on schedule as I submitted the scope statement package. In the original Gantt Chart, my Design Phase was planned for a duration of 11 days and the 3D modelling phase for 24 days. This is were I ran into some issues as It took me longer than planned to learn the surface tools in solidworks and go through tutorials and online help video's on youtube to figure out how to approach the design of the vehicle. As shown in the schedule above, I was constantly editing and changing and reworking the design of the vehicle and 3D modelling which caused me to spend more time than originally scheduled to finish the design and modelling phase. This caused a spike in the SPI value raising the value to..... After I finished the design and got approval from the project adviser, the build phase moved ahead pretty quickly with the help of Colin (wood shop adviser). This cause our SPI curve to normalize a bit in the end as I was able to present with a cnc machined buck part on December 4th as planned. There were a few complications with machining the part in the machine as we could not finish the product to the desired finish. After the presentation, during the sanding phase, the buck cracked and was destroyed thus I was not able to complete the testing and finishing phase as hoped. As this capstone project was reversed for me as the summer semester was my first capstone and this fall semester was my second, I ran into many unplanned issues as to the required tasks and time allotted for the presentation. my final SPI value as of 12/13/2019 is 0.95.
Costs
The budget at completion value (BAC) originally was estimated at $2,253.00 which includes labour and cost of materials. However, due to saving on material cost due to Colin (wood shop supervisor) finding scrap pine wood for us to use, we did not have to pay anything out of pocket for the wood. Thus our final BAC value was $2,193.00. My estimate at completion (EAC) which is the actual cost (AC) + the estimate to complete (ETC) for the project was at $1771.00 by the time the scope package was due which showed the project was on track and under budget. However, the next two months made the project go over budget as my EAC was much higher than what was budgeted which caused my CPI (0.53) to drop a lot as I had spent many hours on the CAD modelling stage of the project. As of Dec 05th, our CPI (0.76), rose up as we there was less time than originally planned. My final CPI value was 0.67 which was a slight improvement but overall my project was over budget as It required more time and more resources to learn and model the VW Bug in solidworks than anticipated originally.
