This month, we’re excited to feature Sarah Bourbonniere for our Instagram Takeover! Sarah is an Elder Life Specialist who coordinates the Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP) at Grand River Hospital. HELP is an evidence-based care strategy delivered by trained volunteers to reduce functional decline and prevent delirium in hospitalized older adults.
Join us for a relaxing art session where we’ll paint canvases and photo frames, capturing moments that remind us to slow down and appreciate life. We’ll also watch a touching video featuring older adults sharing advice they’d give to their younger selves. Enjoy a soothing evening with free pizza and inspiration for living in the moment!
This term we hosted an inspiring online letter-writing workshop where participants learned to build healthy habits, set meaningful goals, and connect with their future selves. Through guided activities and reflective writing, they discovered the power of words as a tool for personal growth and self-discovery. It was an unforgettable journey of inspiration and connection!
A new tips on healthy aging initiative aimed to improve physical and mental wellbeing, and reduce disease risk.
This term's takeover was done by Karen, a Ph.D. Candidate in the Aging, Health and Well-Being program at the School of Public Health Sciences. Karen’s research examines the newly introduced four-hour policy in long-term care homes across Ontario. Her thesis aims to examine the potential budgetary, workforce, and policy implications of introducing a staffing standard.
An opportunity to spend time with your friends near the end of term. An animated fantasy film, Howl's Moving Castle, was featured!
UWCAG and UWGERIPC organized a holiday card making event to send holiday wishes to long-term care and retirement homes in the KW region.
Takeover done by Tara Kuhn, a Ph.D. candidate in the department of Kinesiology (specializing in Aging, Health and Well-being), studying with Dr. Laura Middleton. Her research looks at the intersection of sleep and exerises for brain health.
Takeover done by Dr. Caitlin McArthur, a registered physiotherapist and an assistant professor in the School of Physiotherapy at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Her research focuses on prevention of falls, fractures, and functional decline for older adults receiving home care or living in long-term care.
A new initiative, Aging Minds explores how aging impacts mental health and the brain!
A gala event featuring performances and a guest speaker, in support of the Alzheimer's Society of Waterloo Wellington.
UW CAG has started off the term with a new initiative that aims to introduce communities to health services and programs in the community as well as assist seniors in finding access to the right community resources. Additionally, current research findings are also included.
UW CAG's Instagram was taken over by own of our execs, Catherine! Catherine wishes to pursue geriatric law in the future and answered questions students had about gerontology, UW CAG, and her future aspirations!
Our second Instagram Takeover of the term was done by Research Assistant Professor Andrew Robertson of the University of Waterloo. Professor Robertson works at the Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging and answered many questions relative to his research initiatives including the effects that aging has on cardiovascular health.
UW CAG kicked off the night by discussing the various physical and mental health benefits yoga can provide, particularly during the aging process. We were then joined by a yoga instructor for campus recreated for guided meditation and a beginner's yoga class!
For this iteration of our Instagram Takeover, we were joined by Rachael Donnely and Vanessa Trinca! Rachael and Vanessa, both members of the University of Waterloo's Aging and Nutrition Lab, showed us a day-in-the-life and answered student questions!
Our newest event series, "Conversations with CAG" allows for a bidirectional chat with an expert in the field of gerontology. For our first iteration, we were joined by Dr. Catherine Tong and PhD Candidate Diya Chowdhury to speak about why patient engagement, particularly with racialized populations, is important. UW CAG joined three other WUSA clubs, UW CAGH, SOCH UWaterloo, and UW Supporting Heart and Stroke, to host a cross-club game night! Attendees were able to learn more about each club and socialize with like-minded individuals.
A relaxing event to unwind before midterms, UW CAG hosted a movie night. The featured film was UP!, a heartwarming classic.
This Instagram takeover was done by Jelena Pavlovic, a student at the University of Waterloo and executive member for UW CAG for the Fall 2021 and Winter 2022 terms. She spoke about her experience while completing a thesis proposal and its connection to aging.
This event featured four graduate students, Emma Conway, Colin Whaley, Diya Chowdhury, and Samira Mehrabi. The Master's, PhD, and MD students spoke to their respective career journeys and their experience in aging research. View the recording here!

This trivia event was hosted by UW CAG as an end-of-term event. Students were able to unwind, learn about gerontology, and get to know other club members!
This event featured 3 co-op students at the University of Waterloo. They each shared their unique experiences relating to various gerontology disciplines.

For UW CAG's first panel event, Dr. John Hirdes and Dr. Catherine Tong spoke in-depth about their experiences within the field of gerontology, beginning at the undergraduate level to their current endeavours.
UW CAG's first general meeting was an opportunity for students to learn more about gerontology, the club, and other ways to get involved at the University of Waterloo.
