Groovy UV Invite
We have officially reach that time of year for our Groovy UV invite. We are so incredibly proud of everyone who competed yesterday. UVM took charge during this competition and did so well. UVM was split up by level and we all started on many different events. WAG Level 8s started on Vault, Platinums started on Bars, and Silvers started on Floor. The MAG level 9 team started on vault with the level 8s. This meet was definitely one of our longest meets but this year we were able to expand our meet to more and more teams. This year UVM competed againts Jurassic, MIT, Brandeis, BU, and Springfield. The meet began around 1:00 PM and went all the way until around 7:30, WOW! We had completely moved the gym around in order to allow spectators and all of our events to fit into the one area. I would say we were very successful in this task and we had one of our largest crowds at the meet; lots of students and familys, even some alumni and old coaches! At the end of the meet UVM was very successful in their podium placements.

It is officially time for the Green and Gold recap! Every year UVM Gymnastics teams up with Green Mountain Training Center to host the Green and Gold Exhibition meet. This is a time for UVM Gymnastics to hang out with the team members of GMTC and build so many great relationships. Both teams split up in half and mix together to create two teams: team Green and team Gold. Both teams are encouraged to show off all of their spirit and the team with the most team spirit wins the meet and gets to have some bragging rights. The meet went very well, with everyone cheering each other on, from the youngest bronze to the oldest NAIGC College gymnast. There were no judges so the routines were just for fun, for practice, and to show each other what each type of gymnastics is like! It was a great opportunity for UVM to show the GMG girls what NAIGC College Club gymnastics is like, as it is not a well-known option for gymnasts after high school. This year was so much fun as many of the athletes got excited to see all of the floor routines and music that everyone has picked out. It was also an opportunity for the UVM Men's team to show what men's gymnastics is like as GMG does not currently have a men's team program. Overall it was a super fun day and we are so excited to be able to team up with GMG again to make this meet happen! It is also encouraged that gymnasts and some of the gymnastics helpers dress in the colors that coordinate with their team they were chosen to be on. It is exciting to see the gymnasts get into their team spirit with the most exciting outfits. Hopefully we can keep the tradition going for the future years!
Hello! Time for an End of the Season Update!! Now that we have reached the end of the 2022-2023 season, we have made so many amazing memories filled with laughs, some tears, and new friends. The team traveled to Memphis, Tennessee for the NAIGC National Competition. Four different level teams competed in a weekend-long event filled with lots of competitors from all over the country. The UVM team traveled with a total of twenty-four members across the country to compete for their skills and show off what our amazing club can do. The team all woke up around 3:00 am on Wednesday, March 29, and met at the Burlington International Airport to fly on our first flight to Atlanta, Georgia, and then a second flight to Memphis, Tennessee. The airport, definitely new UVM, had arrived and we were all so excited to get to the competition area. The competition didn’t start until Thursday, March 30 in the morning but the team was meeting up to test the equipment that night and get a feel for the competition. All four levels split up to test all of the equipment and get a good feel for what the competition would be like for the day that they were competing.
The Next morning, the UVM team woke up bright and early for our first competition of the weekend, The Xcel Silver Team. This team consisted of Senior Alex Dunstan, Junior Samantha Murphy, and Sophomore Jessica Reich. The silver competition went great and the team did amazing. Samantha Murphy had a high score on bars; 9.600.
Session 2 was next, which meant it was time for UVM’s second level to compete, The Xcel Platinum Team. The team consisted of Juniors Alexis Drown, Olivia Patrick, and Katie Delaney, Sophomores Tia Laurent and Sadie Gidner, and Freshmen Sayde Frank, Abby Bodenrader, and Maddie Sherwood-McGrath. Starting on the floor for their competition, the team had some amazing Preliminary Scores, the highest score for our team was 9.800 from Sayde Frank. The team continued to have a great meet on bars and beam and even better on beam. Maddie Sherwood-McGrath scored the team’s highest beam score of 9.550. The Xcel Platinum team had two finals qualifiers, Abby Bodenrader for All-Around and Beam and Maddie Sherwood-McGrath for Beam.
Session 3 followed, it was time for the level 8 team to compete. The team consisted of; grad student McB McBrayers, Senior Seana Kelly, Juniors Brigitte Yargeau, and Frances Leadman, and Sophomores Lindsay Carter, Lauren Parks, Carly Mindell, and Georgia Lamarre. The team started on vault and had some amazing landings from Sean Kelly, Brigette Yargeau, and McB McBrayers; all three landed their vaults. The team then traveled to Bars and Beam where they had some amazing stuck routines, Frances Leadman stuck her crazy bar dismount as well as having a high score on beam that was 9.525. Floor routines were amazing as always. The team qualified for team finals as well as having two individuals qualify for event finals; Frances Leadman on all four events and McB McBrayers on vault.
The next day meant it was the men's competition that started later that evening. UVM got the chance to explore downtown Memphis that morning; many traveling to the Bass Pro Shop Pyramid and even Elvis’s House at Graceland. The Men’s competition team consisted of Decathletes McB McBrayers and Lauren Parks, Senior Zach Miller, Junior Johnny Webber, Sophomores Jacob Brodsky and Ryder McLaughlin, and Freshman Topher Richards. The team started on Parallel Bars and traveled to all 6 events getting some amazing routines that where captured perfectly on film. Zach Miller was first all around in the preliminary lineups meaning he qualified for all-around finals.
Finals took place the very next day first thing in the morning. Finals are always a crazy day filled with competitions all across the facility happening simultaneously. There were amazing routines all throughout and in the end we even had some placements. For Men's level 9, Zach Miller placed 1st All Around, 1st High Bar, Parallel Bars, 1st Pommel Horse, 2nd Rings, and 4th on Floor. For the Women’s Xcel Platinum team, Abby Bodenrader placed 3rd on Beam and 8th All Around. For the Women’s Level 8 team, Frances Leadmen placed 7th on Beam, 9th on Floor, and 3rd on Bars.
The UVM gymnastics team came to conquer and had an amazing meet making so many new memories! It was an amazing trip and a great way to show off what we have accomplished that year. Can’t wait to see what next year brings and with that the Nationals End of the Season Recap has come to an end!
Hello! Back again with another season update! This time coming to you live from our Annual Groovy UV competition! Turning the page from an iconic '22 season, this season has been filled with making new memories and loads of fun! WIth a huge freshman class, our team is the largest it has been in some time! We are loving watching this team grow, and being able to share in the love we all have for this sport! Thus far, we have had our Green and Gold showcase with the GMTC girls which is always a great way to showcase our routines and have some fun with the littles. The UVM team was split in half dividing into the green vs. gold teams. Lots of team spirit and cheering was present. Ok before I get too sidetracked, let's get back to our Groovy UV meet. The day began around 12:15 as we had to set up the gym for the big day. This involved moving judges tables around, moving equipment, setting up the scoring system, etc. I won't bore you with all these details. Ok so now at this point, the competition has begun to roll in. We competed head to head against BU, MIT, and Jurassic gymnastics. Our Platinum, Sliver and Level 8 teams did not disappoint and performed some SOLID routines. What a way to officially start our season! Here are some specific details and scores from this competition. Beginning with our team scores, our Level 8 and Platinum teams put up HUGE numbers averaging top scores with a team total of 105.5 and 98.9. Some exceptional performance shout outs go to our Decathletes, Lauren Parks and McB McBrayer who competed in all four women’s events and all six of the men’s events. This is no easy task, and we could not be more proud. Huge all around scores from Senior Seana Kelly with a 35.3 and Freshman Amelie Jarvis scoring a 35.2 in our Level 8 competition. Freshmen Sayde Frank and Abby Bodenrader dominated our platinum floor rotation putting up scores of 9.55 and 9.5. Samantha Murphy similarly set the bar HIGH for our silvers scoring a competition high of 9.5. Junior Johnny Weber and Freshman Topher Richards, competing in their first ever gymnastics competition, put up impressive all-around (AA) scores of 51.8 and 47.5. Senior Zach Miller and Sophomore Jacob Brodsky who are both key players for our Mens’ Team both consistently compiled HUGE all around scores, winning the competition. THATS RIGHT! These cats are the grooviest! If you are UVM alum or a current member, or maybe you are reading this because you are interesting in this awesome club, but whatever the case may be repeat after me; WHEN I SAY GROOVY....YOU SAY UV! GROOVY! UV! GROOVY! UV! GROOVY! UV!!! WOOO!
For our NAIGC Regionals Competition, we shipped down to Boston to compete at MIT. Here are some podium results: Starting off with our silver team, Samantha Murphy placed 2nd on Uneven Bars and 6th on Beam. Moving onto our platinums, Freshman Maddie McGrath came in 6th on vault and floor, Sayde Frank scored 2nd on bars, and Alisa Hanada also placed 6th on vault. Our Level 8’s came in FIRST at Regionals with some individual awards as well. On Vault, Capt. Brigitte came in 5th, on bars Junior Frances Leadman came in 4th and Senior Seana Kelly scored in 6th place. Moving on to beam, Frances scored 4th and Freshman Amelie Jarvis came in 7th. Not switching things up on Floor, heavy hitters, Frances came in 2nd and Amelie in 3rd. For the All Around competition, Seana scored 5th and Amelie received 9th place. I would say lots of UVM representation on that podium! WOO! What an amazing first half of the season we have had, creating so many wonderful memories together! Next stop, Memphis Tennessee for Nationals!
That's it for now...stay tuned for our nationals recap!
The 2022-2023 season is in full swing, but we can't help to feel a little nostalgic looking back at last season. Somehow in the excitement flooding back from Wisconsin we forgot to update all of you. BUT don't fret any longer, here it is, the update everyone has been waiting for.
The 2021-2022 NAIGC Nationals Competition was held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin which was immediately coined "The city that never sleeps," however we quickly learned that Milwaukee does indeed sleep. The journey began one Tuesday night, where we travelled to Boston in vans. The excitement was real and before we knew we had arrived to our destination. We quickly hit the hay, as a big travel day awaited. The next morning, we beat the sunrise for an early morning wakeup at 3:30 am. I would tell you all about each step of the journey; the adventure through security, the imperative coffee trip to the one and only Starbucks, the flight itself, etc, but something tells me you want to hear about the more exciting parts. However, I cannot neglect to shoutout President Sydney Caldwell who planned this first leg of the trip flawlessly. Ok so fast forward a few hours, and we finally made it to our hotel in Milwaukee where a few team members rested from the long day of travel, others checked out the facilities, and some even felt adventurous and hit the town for some shopping and exploration. Wednesday night consisted of team dinner, and a mandatory practice for both our Women's and Men's team in the competition facilities.
OK HERE IT IS! Thursday morning, COMPETITION DAY! The day began with a sacred tradition as each team member kissed the beloved bread. Then, our women's level 7 team suited up and recited the oath of UVM Gymnastics; KAZOO and KAZAMMING right onto the competition floor. The level 7 rotation started on BARS and our girls did not disappoint. Senior Emilee Friedman and Sophomore Lauren Frampton scored big with their flawless bar routines and Sydney Caldwell finished off her gymnastics career with a big STICK! Moving onto beam, Senior Katie Hewlett led this rotation off and absolutely nailed it! Moving onto floor, the energy was HIGH and the entire lineup delivered with sky high tumbling and awesome dance choreography. Vault was also smooth and ended with lots of sticks. Thanks to captain Kira Fisher, the energy not once wavered and the GROOVY UV was recited at all points that were deemed necessary.
NEXT UP... 8 great 8's!
Walking into the arena with style and playing “Starships” by Nicki Minaj, the level 8's marched into the arena. Before even making it to the competition floor, our girls ran into the one and only Chellsie Memmel. No big deal, but we also snuck in a picture with her holding the beloved bread. If that didn’t set a good precedent for the competition I don’t know what would! Anyways, our level 8’s rocked the house down nailing routine after routine on each event. The energy our team brought out onto the floor was so contagious that even the judges commented.
Starting off on bars, the energy was electrifying one stick and big swings after the other. Big scorers, Elise Courtney, Seana Kelly, and Frances Leadman monopolized this rotation with scores in the 9.2-9.7 range. Moving onto beam, both Frances Leadman and Georgia Lamarre did not waver once in their beam routine; it was almost as if their feet were glued to the beam. Moving onto floor, former D3 gymnast, McB McBrayer, came out of retirement for us and performed an amazing floor routine. The energy was high and our girls were on a roll. Ending on vault, Junior Seana Kelly committed to the one and done rule. Not warming up prior to her performance she absolutely nailed her Tsuk with a STICK. And the crowd goes wild. Our level 8's finished the competition in first place and secured a place in the team finals for the next day. THE Bread was #TOASTED!
Friday morning had a late start after a long competition day for our women’s team. The morning was free, so some of us caught up on school work, our upperclassmen had breakfast with Coach Kevin, and others explored all Milwaukee had to offer. In the later part of the day, the Men’s team marched confidently into the arena. I may be wary of a few details in this competition, but I can confidently say everything we had in us was left out onto the floor. Yes, even our voices! Consistently outstanding routines performed by Junior, Zach Miller on all six events, which is not surprising for anyone who is familiar with his gymnastics. Freshman Jacob Brodsky also held his own at his first collegiate Nationals competition, absolutely nailing his pommel horse routine. Seniors Ethan and Zach finished their gymnastics careers with outstanding routines, big swings, and solid sticks.
Friday night rolls around and we find out both our level 7 and level 8 Womens’ Teams have qualified for finals the next day. We also had quite a few individuals qualify including Zach and Jacob. SO EXCITING!
OK NOW THE MOST EXCITING PART: FINALS DAY
My personal favorite part of the finals competition was our level 8 vault rotation. Please humor me as I recreate this for all of you.
Vault line up for finals consisted of Seana Kelly, Lauren Parks, Brigitte Yargeau and McB McBrayer. 3 of the four competitors were warming up tsuks. One after the other warm ups followed. The superstar on this rotation was Bridgitte. This is where I need you to all channel your inner gymnast. Ok, here we go. Brigitte leads the rotation off, but prior to any competition a huddle is formed by Senior Elise Courtney. Emotions were running high partly due to bad warmups, but also our team wanted to rally together and give this competition everything we had. Bridgitte salutes to the judge, she starts running, first tsuk, and she lands a bit short, but it's ok she has another shot. She salutes again, runs fast, jumps on the springboard, BIG BLOCK, high flip, and a perfect STICK. Instant tears of joy follow, and the entire level 8 team runs down the runway to congratulate her. It was like an ESPN moment right there. McB and Seana also had perfect tsuks!
Another highlight from the level 8 competition was floor where Senior Elise Courtney performed the routine of her life. Nearing the ending of her routine, the level 7 girls came running to the floor to cheer her on. She finished the routine and our whole team swarmed the floor for one last GROOVY UV. Because everyone was competing at the same time, it is hard to recount the details from each competition but everyone gave it their all, and performed awesome routines.
The Results are in! The big banquet took place that night after finals. And UVM Gymnastics did indeed take home some hardware. DRUMROLLL PLEASE!!!!!!
Announcing the team awards first: In Second Place, both our Level 7 and 8 Womens Teams!!!! WOOOO!!! WE ARE SECOND IN THE NATION!
Individuals: Level 7 Bars Champion and 3rd place on Vault….. Lauren Frampton.
Level 8 Beam Champion….Frances Leadman
Elise Courtney swept the podium coming in 3rd on Floor, 4th on beam, and 5th on Bars.
Coming in 5th place on floor….McB McBrayer
2nd place Men’s All Around… the legend himself, Zach Millerrrrr.
WOW! What a talented group we have and what an awesome time in Wisconsin. We even made friends on our journey with Penn State Gymnastics. We are big fans of their skeleton dog mascot!
The next morning, riding the high of our big win, we had lunch as a team, and bought a few souvenirs before heading back to Vermont. Some of our members found it absolutely essential to bring home a cheesehead, because when in Wisconsin you don’t have a choice not to. DUH! What a wonderful week filled with awesome memories and such a bonding experience for all of us!
Nationals Recap 2022 has come to an end, and with that we say GOOD BYE WISCONSIN! You were so good to us!
A quick note to our seniors,
Elise, Sydney, Kira, Katie, Emilee, Zach, Ethan, and Chace! Where do we even begin? UVM gymnastics would not be the team it is today without all of you! The tireless contributions you have made to our team are recognized and we cannot be more thankful. You have led our team with grace and humility and left such a presence in the gym. I can say without a doubt that you have all become role models for so many of us. Now as you enter into your adult lives, know that your family here at UVM gymnastics will always be cheering for you!
All our love,
UVM Gymnastics
After having a year of intense COVID protocols and no travel, this season felt great to get back to an almost normal year. We had a huge amount of new members with loads of excitement and motivation! During the fall semester we had a great start to the season with an intrasquad meet. This spring we successfully hosted our annual Green and Gold meet with GMTC and our Groovy UV Classic with 4 teams from out of state!! You could tell from the energy of the gymnasts how exciting it was to get back to competing. In April, the team will take off to NAIGC Nationals in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Many of our gymnasts have come forward and told us how this team was one of the only things that kept them motivated this past year. It created a sense of family during these uncertain times. We are so happy to continue to provide a place for people to get active and a build a community! I have attached two photos from our annual Groovy UV meet: one of our whole team and one of our graduating seniors. We are incredibly grateful for all that these eight seniors have given to this program. You will all be greatly missed!
We got a late start in the semester trying to figure out practice logistics with new mask and social distancing policies. Once practice started we were able to practice 4 days a week (the same amount of time as pre-COVID days)! We practiced with masks on, social distance, temperature checks, COVID tests, and new practice structures, but we made it work! Our team got a ton of new members and practices allowed for some of the only social interactions gymnasts had for the year. We had intrasquad meets and even held a virtual Groovy UV Classic with other schools! Our team made the most of this year and are excited to finally be able to travel next year!
We started off the season great in the fall with meets at Simmons, Brockport, and MIT. Then during spring break our semester got cut sort when UVM went virtual during the COVID pandemic. We were unable to have our Groovy UV Home meet in March and Nationals 2020 in Rhode Island was also canceled. During our time at home, our team did a virtual superlative zoom event. Here are some pictures of our team pre COVID.
Finally, the post you have all been waiting for… THE LONG NATIONALS RECAP!!
This year we had the pleasure of leaving quite late. We got to sleep in till a lovely 4:15am! Quite a step up from years past. In all honesty, that time of the morning is lovely. A little less lovely with the nervous adrenaline coursing through your veins, but lovely nonetheless. We left a cold and dreary VT and a few hours later landed in balmy Florida. We arrived at our hotel, and promptly fell asleep. The hotel was located directly on the beach. It was insane. It was kinda like spring break. Except with more gymnastics and less break. That night we had open workout which consisted of warming up under the bars so we could set them to our weird competition height and feeling the relief of our joints when tumbling on the amazing Spieth floor. (There are three important things in life. Love, Happiness, and Spieth Floors.)
The next morning, we woke up, got some caffeine running through our veins and some eye shadow on our faces and prepared for competition day. The hype was real, and it was made even realer by the MAG team bringing munchkins and cheers to each room, akin to Winter Caroling. The women put on our lanyards and pinned our numbers to our backs and made our way across the street to the convention center. Both our Level 7 team and Level 8 team started on floor. Add our floor rotation to that list of important things because my goodness was it incredible. And loud. We had hit routine after hit routine, cumulating with Lily scoring a HUGE (cue Tim Dagget voice) 9.7. We then headed to vault where we continued to kick butt with hit Tsuks, handsprings, half ons, and the like. Fueled by bread we made our way to bars. The level 8 team had a few bumps on bars, but we carried on. The level 7 team in its entirely DID NOT TAP THEIR FEET on low bar!! We sent our thanks to Leahy, one of our amazing coaches who could not make the trip but helped us keep our feet up. She was very proud. We had a pretty substantial break before beam, where we probably ate some more, danced a bit, and made some more “get this bread” jokes and remarks. Finishing on beam, we had hit handsprings, cartwheels, jumps, and ended our meet with some great stuck dismounts. The women breathed a sigh of relief have had a great meet (and to have been done with beam) while the men were getting ready for their meet and our decathlete was simultaneously shoving food in her mouth while being as close to asleep as possible.
In our men’s side, we had a level 9 team, one UVM/NAIGC Alumni competing level 9, and one decathlete competing developmental. Luckily we were all just about in the same rotation. We started on parallel bars where we had come great kips, back offs, and shoulderstands. We then moved to high bar for some more mad skillz, featuring a nice caught yamawake and a giant to backhip circle that was maybe faster than the nascar happening in the Daytona beach speedway. And again some high flyaways. The bread was about to be taken out of the oven as we headed over to floor. I think there might have been some glue stuck to the floor because of how many passes we stuck. Back tucks, front tucks, front halfs, double backs, you name it. Over to pommel horse we went. At this point our decathlete felt like she was going to fall over so she broke out the sour patch kids to fuel the team through the rest of the meet with their pure sugar. Pommels was a thing! Lots of spinning, some sharp scissors, some nice press handstands, a lot of leg cuts, it was great. Then to rings. It may be getting old at this point to keep reading about how we hit our events but like… we rocked it and hit our events. And rings was no exception. Lots of strength, many muscle-ups, some cool crosses. Some laughter and chatting with other gymnasts as well. And more stuck dismounts. Our last event of the day was vault, where we also stuck a bunch of stuff. But this time the stuff was of the handspring, half on/half off, and tsuk variety. Then we were DONE! What a gymnastics filled day! You could definitely say we got the bread.
The next day was mostly a rest day for surfing and soaking up the sun, but we did also have two competitors. We had a UVM representative on the NAIGC Women’s developmental team kick some butt with beautiful front handspring vaults and a floor routine to The Greatest Showman. Our decathlete decided that 9 hours of straight gymnastics the day before just wasn’t enough gymnastics and registered for the Power Tumbling competition 8 minutes before it started. She had never actually done power tumbling before and doesn’t do back handsprings, but that wasn’t going to stop her. She had no idea what she was doing, but had a lot of fun and made her goals of staying on the floor strip (you get pretty dizzy and it’s hard to tumble in a straight line) and not forgetting her passes (she had to write them on her hand to remember, but hey- whatever works!)
That night, after a delicious team dinner, was developmental and decathlon awards, where the NAIGC developmental team ft UVM represent won! Bread acquired! Also in this award ceremony, our decathlete came in 3rd! Wild! She said her internal dialogue consisted of AAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAaa for the next few hours.
But that’s not all folks, for Saturday is for the finals, and thus, more gymnastics! We had so many finalists!! One of L7 bars, L8 floor, L9 All Around, and on the men’s side L9 floor, and L9 All Around. Finals was a blur of cheering, running, having pounding headaches from dehydration, and that was just for the people not competing. The competitors were out to turn the gotten-bread into toast, and they did just that. We had hit routines from every competitor! Giants, yamawakes, back fulls and doubles (both flips and twists) and a pbars routine that scored 12.6 out of 12.9!! Also we all got to witness a STUCK triple back off high bar. For those of you who have less gymnastics experience, a guy from USA stuck a triple back off high bar in the 2008 Olympics. OLYMPICS PEOPLE. NAIGC has some crazy good gymnastics.
Bread toasted, energy spent, we went back to our hotel to dress up and take team photos for banquet. At banquet we ate some more good food, and picked up our medal haul. Our award list continued: Women: L7 bars 4th place, L8 floor 4th place, L8 vault 10th place, men L9: floor 4th place, and then our all arounder came in 2nd Overall, 1st on pommel horse then won four more medals that honestly is just a blur of success. Team-wise we were also voted North East Regional Club of the Year, and had a few scholar athletes, and one 5-year longevity award athlete. We thought we were done so we started taking a few photos and then… Our mens team placed 3rd?!! In the Nation!! We are all SO PROUD.
Riding on the high of success, we had a fun banquet with the others gymnasts from around the country, making new friends and memories. The next morning we boarded the plane back to good old Vermont, where we promptly went back to the gym to work new skills and upgrades for next year.
It came to my attention that I somehow hadnt posted here about nationals yet?!!
Well, HOLD ON TO YOUR HATS WAS IT AMAZING
Overall we won 12 medals, AND are the Northeast Regional Club of the Year!
Our amazing Mens team placed THIRD in the Level 9 team competition!!!
Doug won pommel horse, 2nd AA and places on every event but rings
Meghan won 3rd in Decathlon (all womens events and all mens events- aka 9 hours of straight gymnastics
Will placed 4th on floor
Helen placed 4th on L7 bars
Lily placed 4th on L8 floor
Lara placed 10th on L8 vault
Excuse us while we go nap for a few weeks
Actually, just kidding a lot of us are already back in the gym!
You might be wondering... What happened to UVM Gymnastics? Why has there been such radio silence? Well, fret no longer for here we are with the (semester...? thus far?) recap!
Currently, when you walk through the doors of Green Mountain Gymnastics during the evening hours, you will see a good group of UVM students working hard. Scanning the gym you'll see Helen swinging free hips to giants on uneven bars, doing routine after routine to put everything together. Over on floor you might catch Aenea focusing in the corner before running into a front handspring front tuck, a new addition to her floor routine that just keeps getting higher and higher. A cheer erupts from the corner of the room where Doug has just caught his huge yamawaki on high bar. Out of the corner of your eye you see Katie landing her back handspring on beam and Ryan (which one? maybe both) swinging on pommel horse to get their routines down pat. Your attention turns back to the pit area where Isabel has just landed her tsuk onto a stack of 8 inch mats, and you catch a glimpse of Meghan pressing into a shoulderstand on rings, training her routines for the decathlon competition.
These are just some of the activity going on at the gym these days! In less than two weeks we will be in Daytona Beach Florida. Will we be soaking up the sun? Maybe, if we have time, but more importantly we will be competing in the largest collegiate gymnastics competition in the United States; NAIGC National Championships. The whole team is training hard to get new skills and polish old ones for their routines in preparation. This year, we will be bringing three teams and one decathlete. The women have a team in the Level 7 and Level 8 divisions, and the Men competing modified Level 9. Meghan will be the first UVM representative to compete decathlon where she'll be competing in the lower level.
Is this the first exciting meet of the semester? Au contraire! In fact, this will have been the fourth meet this semester, and the fifth over the full year.
In early December the team traveled down to Boston for our sister school, BU's home meet, Rhetts Bowl. We did some flips, held some handstands, and afterwards ate a lot of burgers and milkshakes. As well, there was a team scaring (ok maybe only some of us were scared) with a late night showing of The Conjuring after the meet.
As the semester ended, we all went off to eat more food and sleep a lot, but before we knew it we were back in the gym getting ready for a meet at Brandeis. We may have gotten stuck in a snowstorm on the way down and missed our first rotation, but that didn't stop us from sweeping the men's all around competition. Its a good thing we didn't fly to this meet, as our bags might have gone over the weight limit with the amount of medals we picked up. Lara picked up a couple titles for the women, and Will, Ryan, Ryan, and Sophia as a man all had medals up the wazoo.
There was no rest for us, as we started gearing up for Regional Championships and Groovy UV/Home meet. Soon enough we found ourselves in the SGA vans again (with all three rows of non-rained-upon seats) on I-89 to Boston. This time we were on our way to MIT. Fueled by continental breakfast and hyped by Rihanna, we took some names, to the point where our men came away with a yet-to-be-named Turtle for WINNING (you heard it here, folks!) Level 9! We again had a slew of medalists, including Lara on the women's side, and Doug, Will and Ryan P on the men's side.
A week later we were back at it again, but this time in the comfort of our own gym. It was Groovy UV time! The gym was packed between all the teams that came, our huge team, and a bunch of spectators! At the end of it all, one of our women's teams came in 3rd, and our men's team came in first, and there were many individual medals to be had, including Meghan-as-a-man/woman coming third on men's high bar. After those two weeks we all went home to take copious amounts of naps to recover.
Springing back to today. The sun is shining, it is actually possible to feel your hands if you walk outside, and UVM Gymnastics is doing it's last preparations to prepare for next week. We sold food and ate food as fundraisers, now all that's left to do it get hyped!
Stay tuned groovy friends....

Over the weekend UVM Gymnastics teamed up with Green Mountain Gymnastics to hold a Green and Gold exhibition meet. This was a great time as UVM practices at Green Mountain Training Center, so it was great to team up with them to host a mock meet! Both teams split up in half and mixed together to create two teams: team Green and team Gold. The meet itself went very well, with everyone cheering each other on, from the youngest bronze to the oldest NAIGC College gymnast. There were no judges so the routines were just for fun, for practice, and to show each other what each type of gymnastics is like! It was a great opportunity for UVM to show the GMG girls what NAIGC College Club gymnastics is like, as it is not a well-known option for gymnasts after high school. It was also great for the GMG teams to show the UVM gymnasts what club gymnastics is like, as not all of them have club gymnastics backgrounds. It was also an opportunity for the UVM Men's team to show what men's gymnastics is like as GMG does not currently have a men's team program. Overall it was a super fun day and we are so excited to be able to team up with GMG again to make this meet happen! Hopefully we can keep the tradition going for the future years!
The UVM gymnastics club recently started the 2018-2019 season with the first official practice! This practice brought many newcomers to the club- from all skill levels and grades. We welcomed gymnasts who had previously competed level 9, to those who had never been in the gym before! We are so excited to get this new season started! Coming up we have team dinners and corn mazes planned for fun team events! The date of our first meet is not quite yet confirmed, but keep checking back- we'll post about it as soon as we know!

Thank you seniors for your hard work and dedication to this team- each of you bringing your unique talents and interests and helping us grow to be the best we can be! We will miss you, but you are more than welcome to come back and visit us anytime! We hope to see you at meets through the next season!
Here's a season recap video- including the senior video.
The largest squad yet, 22 of us, left UVM Tuesday afternoon for the 2018 NAIGC National Gymnastics Championships. After a couple speedbumps in travel but help from amazing other teams we all made it to Fort Worth TX to enjoy the sunshine! ... And do gymnastics of course! A huge shoutout to the NAIGC for running such a huge and successful meet, and to Spieth America for providing great equipment (the floor was so bouncy we were flying!) The men's team competed on day one. Ryan competed all around for the first time, while Taylor added a back tuck to his floor routine. Jack completed all 6 events successfully, as did Will who also had a fan club of past teammates cheering him on. Doug landed his tsuk full on vault and what a better place to do it than nationals! Captain Nick was his usual loud cheerful and supportive self and hit his cross on rings. The team went to the cheesecake factory for dinner and ran into Temple and Boston University who started the team Groovy UV chant from across the street.
The women competed day two, both teams in the same rotation starting on bars where Jess had the highest score of all competitors in prelims. Michele also hit her bar routine including her uprise and stuck dismount, Laura also hit her bar set including back to back uprises. Over to beam where Tessa Mariah and Clara all hit solid sets. On floor Marissa Katelyn and Isabel all had strong floor routines, Chei was successful with her new back tuck and back pike passes and Meghan hit her double somi pass after struggling with it in practices. Lily qualified for floor finals as well! Helen hit a beautiful front handspring vault, and Erin and Jamie hit their half half vaults as well. Lara qualified for Vault finals with her piked tsuk, and Lily qualified for All Around finals! There was an amazing moment at the end of the competition during the last few vaults, when everyone on the teams were standing on the sidelines, some holding hands, and all YELLING cheers for our teammates to land their vaults- and it worked with all our Tsukers landing successfully!
The best 'surprise' was finding out friday night that the Women's team qualified for Level 8 finals, by winning the East Coast and coming in second over the whole competition! What an incredible feeling!
The only downside was that we had to compete two days in a row- but it was worth it for competing in the loud and crazy environment that was finals! We didnt have such a great day 2, struggling on beam, but we had great bars, vault and floor rotations! Lily placed 4th on floor, and Lara is the newly crowned vault champion! And the team came in 6th out of the nation! It was an incredible meet and half week! As if that wasnt enough, Doug was also named Athlete of the Year by the NAIGC.
After such a trip we all came home, and took naps. Daytona Beach 2019 here we come!
Home meet was a blast! Both teams did really well. We had Two squads on the Women's side as we had so many women who wanted to compete! The schools that traveled to our meet were: Boston University, University of Rhode Island, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, NAIGC Alumni, and our captain from last year Cassandra representing UVM Alumni/Cambridge Community Gymnastics. Also in attendance was Suzi, the 'new team mascot'.
The afternoon started out with our Australian Exchange student, Chei, singing the American National Anthem!
The men had a great meet winning the team competition!
Ryan had an amazing save on rings on a back uprise. He didn't have quite enough swing but muscled his way back up! In addition he competed his roundoff backtuck on floor for the first time!
Jordan competed at his first ever gymnastics meets (he just joined the sport this year!) He competed on rings, floor, and pbars.
Taylor's tumbling keeps getting better, and he had a super high front tuck on floor for a great routine!
Jack competed all around for the first time since high school, competing pommel horse for the first time in college.
Our captain Nick couldn't compete at this meet, but he was still very present cheering louder than anyone else in the meet!
Matt is our pommel horse specialist, and this meet was no exception- he knocked out yet another solid pommel set!
Danny donned some amazing USA flag shorts and they helped him to a great floor routine, including a press handstand and a front full!
Will had yet another great meet, placing 2nd on pbars, and 5th all around!
The all around title went to our President, Doug, who had a fabulous meet as well as competing his double back on floor!
The women also came in first in the team competition!
Jess and Lara came in 1st place all around, both with really great competitions! Jess came in second on floor, and Lara won vault, and came in second on bars.
Isabel competed a solid all around rocking out to her "Lone Digger" floor music, where she tumbled her back full!
Mariah came in third on bars with her signature straddle back and great giants.
Lily had a great floor routine to "Kill Bill" where she hit her first pass of front layout punch front tuck. You could hear people whistling her music through the gym after her routine.
Helen keeps getting better and better, and she has great form! Here she hit a beautiful front handspring vault.
Mallory also had a great floor set, coming in third with a 9.4!
Julia competed her first meet for UVM here! She competed all events except vault! She stuck her flyaway off bars cold!
We also had Anna competing for UVM for the first time! She did bars and floor, where she whipped out a standing backtuck in between dance moves!
The last UVM debut we had here was Aena, also competing everything but vault! She had a very solid beam routine with a stuck front tuck dismount.
Clara competed three events, everything but floor here. She had a great bar set where she has very good form!
Marissa was another to hit three solid events, getting her back uprise on bars!
Our amazing treasurer Laura was another to compete all events but floor. She has a very solid half on half off on vault and this meet was no exception!
After singing the national anthem, Chei went on to compete a floor routine with both a new roundoff backtuck AND back pike!
Katelyn competed everything but vault at this meet. She too keeps getting better and better! Its hard to remember she just started gymnastics this year!
Cici picked up bars for this meet, the first time she's competed it for UVM!
Wilhelmina came off a broken finger to compete both beam and floor here!
Tessa has been dealing with a knee injury, but was still able to whip out a nice beam set at home meet.
Sophia also competed beam, where she does a very pretty crocodile mount, and a front tuck dismount.
Michele is a bars specialist, and she has the nicest back uprise I think Ive ever seen, and she hit it here just as well as always!
We also had UVM's first Decathlete at this meet! Meghan competed and hit all 10 events. This includes both women's all around AND men's all around. She was a little tired after this meet.
Overall it was a super fun meet, and it was great to be able to hang out and chat with our sister school BU while we put the gym back together! Thanks to everyone who came out to watch!
First of all, a huge thank you to MIT for hosting a very well organized and very big meet! They did a great job making sure the meet ran smoothly, as well as fostering an energized and exciting environment!
We took a small army of gymnasts down for this meet, 24 people to be exact! On the women's side, it was Helen and Chei's first college gymnastics meet! They both did very well, Helen hitting a great floor set to 'Dont Stop Believing', and Chei competing all around. We started on bars with Clara hitting a clean and fluid set, and Marissa and Michele getting their back uprises. The next event was beam, where Lily hit a very solid set, Sophia showed off her crock mount, and Laura stuck her back tuck dismount. On we went to floor, with Wilhemina not letting a broken finger stop her from competing, Erin hitting her standing back tuck, and Cici competing her brand new backhandspring! Jamie competed floor for the first time here with a great routine, Mallory debuted her new dramatic routine including her front tuck through to back tuck pass, and Jess danced and back-fulled along to 'The Bear Necessities'. The last event was vault, where Lara had a sky-high front handspring, Meghan hit a clean half on half off despite being sick, and Mariah hit a beautiful tsuk with only a tiny step for a 9.2! Isabel had a great meet overall, sticking her tumbling passes on floor, to win 3rd place in the all around competition!! A huge congrats to her!
Stay tuned for the recap of the mens competition!
This past weekend, a small group (it was the weekend before finals so unfortunately we couldn't bring a huge squad) of competitors braved the snowstorm and drove down to Boston University for the Rhetts Bowl. We had five men competing, and seven women. The men had a very solid competition! Nick competed rings where he hit his iron cross, pommel horse and debuted his parallel bars routine. Jack competed every event except pommel horse. He had a great floor routine and was his usual solid self on parallel bars, high bar, and rings. Sophia had her first meet competing mens gymnastics where she hit her parallel bars routine. Danny competed all around for the first time with a new rings routine. He also got his front giants in his high bar routine! Meghan also competed mens all around for the first time, and made her kip on rings. The men ended the day with a third place finish!
The women also had a successful competition. Mariah competed all around and hit a great beam routine. Lily also competed all around and had a great tucked tsuk vault which has been only getting better through the year! Wilhemina hit her floor routine and competed on uneven bars for the first time! Katelyn also debuted two events at this meet: vault and floor. She hit vault and looked like she was having fun on floor! Tessa also made her UVM Gymnastics debut with a nice beam routine! Jess choreographed a new floor routine to 'Bear Necessities' and hit her back full and front tuck stepout through to back tuck on that event. This was Isabel's first competition back from an ACL tear last year, and competed all around and came in 3rd on bars! Overall the women came in second place!
We would like to give a shoutout to BU for being awesome hosts!
Hi flipping friends! A lot of news all in one:
Firstly, We are doing our annual fundraiser to help us get to national championships! Nationals are in Fort Worth Texas this spring! There were over 1,000 competitors last year, and we were very successful with our level 6 team placing 3rd, and we had three individual medalists! Any amount helps us tremendously so please consider donating to our cause! You can donate through this link: http://www.uvmfoundation.org/s/1690/foundation/index.aspx?sid=1690&gid=2&pgid=1282
Secondly,
Our meet at Syracuse University was a huge success! It was only the first meet of the season so we had some rough spots, but our mens team still was able to come in 2nd, and our women's team came in 1st! We also had five individual medalists overall, and one on almost every single event!
You can check out our highlight video here:
Home meet was incredible! The atmosphere in the gym was so full of energy, and we had compliments from some of the other teams of a well run meet! I feel like I keep saying this, but we had probably our best meet all year (which is good because we are really improving for every meet!) On the women's side, we counted no falls and had three rotations of pretty much all hit routines (beam was a little rough) and we came in 1st as a team! We also had someone place on every event but vault (Lily was in 4th) bars: Mariah in 2nd, beam: Mallory in 1st, floor: Jessica in 3rd, and Mariah also came in 3rd in the All Around.
The Men also had a great meet! We only counted one routine with falls, and overall came in 2nd! We as well had 6 great rotations with almost all hit routines! Doug won floor vault and high bar, and came in second for Pbars and Pommels, and Jack came in 3rd on floor and high bar.
This was a great meet on both sides, and with nationals just around the corner it shows that we will be ready for the competition!
Sorry for the lateness of this post: things got a little hectec with finals, and I just got the meet scores so here is a summary of our meet!
Meet at Boston University was a success! On the womens side, there were a pair of tsuks, some fabulous floor routines with great dance, a great jump 1/2 beam mount, a hit cartwheel cartwheel series on beam, some nice giants on bars, and a hit uprise also on bars!
On the mens side, there was some of the best front handspring vaults all season, a great layout tsuk, a great fight and save on a drop cast on Pbars, three hit rings routines, and a stuck front half on floor! The men also placed third with a full team score! And Doug placed second on vault, floor, and high bar, and third on pommel horse.
check it out on our instagram page!
The UVM Gymnastics teams traveled to Syracuse New York to take part in their first meet of the year. They had a very successful meet both on the women's and men's sides. The women had a solid beam rotation with some hit flight series's and stuck dismounts, no falls on floor including hit double somie passes, a good bar rotation with some successful giants, and a great vault rotation with a stuck piked tsuk. On the men's side, they also had a floor rotation with no falls including a front tuck-punch-front-handsping-diveroll pass, three good vaults including a stuck layout tsuk, solid routines on rings pommel horse and parallel bars, and two good high bar routines. Mariah Adams won women's vault with her stuck piked tsuk, and Douglas Hirschhorn won vault with his layout tsuk, high bar, and placed on floor exercise.
The team had a blast and would like to thank Syracuse University Gymnastics for hosting the meet!
We had a lot of fun and teamed up with UVM Club Fencing!
Thank you to everyone who 'liked' our video to support us! In case you haven't seen it yet, here is the video!

4-19-16 National Championships
Whew! What a crazy fun week! I would just like to say how proud I am of our team for having such a successful meet at NAIGC Nationals in Sacramento California! The women came in 8th in the level 8 division, and the men came in 13th in the Collegiate division. Isabel Silveira hit two beautiful vaults in finals, and Doran Zimmerman had a rock solid floor routine in finals! Now we can all relax and work on new skills for next year!
#Tsukramento
(more photos and videos to come!)
4-8-16 Preparing for Nationals
We have been busy in the last few weeks, as we are preparing our routines for the upcoming National Championships. The women's team had a judge come in to give us tips for how to make our routines the best they could be. The men's team has also been working hard to make their routines the best that they can be.
There have been many new skills learned in these past weeks, including tsuks on vault, uprises on uneven bars, and more!
Along with the hard work in the gym, the teams have been having fun dinners and other bonding activities, outside of practices. The picture to the right is of the women's team dinner we had this evening!
3-26-16 Countdown to National Championships
In honor of National Championships being right around the corner,
we are doing a countdown of things to pack for the trip

3-16-16 New Floor at GMTC!
A very exciting week for the UVM Gymnastics club. We have gotten a new floor, and we are excited to try out our routines on it! It is great to be able to learn new skills, and work old routines on the new floor.
