The motto of the NAIGC is “For the Love of the Sport” and we adopt this philosophy. Everybody on our club loves gymnastics, first and foremost. Anybody who has an interest in gymnastics can be a member of the club, whether you are male or female, level 1 or level 10, freshman or senior. Everyone is welcome! We believe that if you are looking for the best all around college athletic & academic experience, UVM and our gymnastics club is the place to be.
Competition is optional. Those who would like to compete can…those who don’t want to compete don’t have to. The gymnasts who choose to compete generally show that commitment by attending practices a minimum of 3 times a week or more. The club has approximately 4 intercollegiate competitions plus Nationals each year in addition to several local exhibitions to promote gymnastics among our area youth.
A college club by definition is student run and operated. Being a member of our club provides you with the opportunity to hold an officer’s position in an activity you love and allows you to become a leader on campus. Your effort and enthusiasm has a direct bearing on the success of our club. In turn, the club provides you with an immediate support mechanism, through the collective experience of all its members, to help you, not only in gymnastics, but in your academics as well. In time, you will be called upon to help lead and support your future team members.
UVM began its gymnastics involvement in 1964. During the subsequent years, gymnastics at UVM has taken many forms – a recreational activity taught in P.E. classes, a 20 year stint as a NCAA varsity team that produced All-Americans; a USAG collegiate club that regularly would place as one of the top 3 clubs teams in the country producing its own athletic and academic All-Americans; and currently a NAIGC collegiate club that over the past several years has placed 3rd, 2nd and in 2004 became national champions.
The NAIGC (National Association of Intercollegiate Gymnastics Clubs) is the largest collegiate gymnastics club organization in the United States. It sponsors approximately 40 men’s teams (more than the NCAA) and 60 women’s teams (more than NCAA Div. II and III combined and almost as many as Div. I). There is a yearly national championship that is located all over the country. The UVM Gymnastics Club has won the NAIGC National Championship (and placed several times in the Top 3) which indicates the quality of our club and the priority that many of our team members give it.
About our former Faculty Adviser and Men's Coach, Gary Bruening:
Gary retired in 2018 after 32 years at UVM Gymnastics.
Before becoming a coach and advisor to the UVM Gymnastics Club in 2003, Gary Bruening was the head coach of the Men’s and Women’s Club team from 1986 – 2002. With all of his dedication and support, the Gymnastics Club team has been able to continue the sport that many UVM gymnasts have grown up loving, and that others have just recently found a love for.
Gary is a 1982 graduate of the College of William & Mary, where he was a nationally ranked gymnast and the first three-time captain for the Tribe. He led William & Mary to four conference championships and an NCAA Regional berth. In 2010, Gary was recognized as UVM Club Advisor of the Year and in 2011, he was recognized nationally by the NCAA for his contributions to varsity and club collegiate gymnastics.
Gary’s coaching and advising philosophy is to encourage students of all ability levels to enjoy the thrill and challenge of performing gymnastics. He believes that the UVM Gymnastics Club provides a positive framework for learning teamwork, discipline and most of all personal leadership and responsibility.
