The first time I ever recorded anything. I wanted to start easy by just recreating something instead of composing, so I decided to remake On & On by Erykah Badu. I did the drums first, and the bass and keys parts were pretty simple to recreate. It ended up sounding pretty good, even if it isn't my composition.
I decided to do another Erykah recreation, this time with the song Next Lifetime. Not too much to say about this one, just a fun bouncy drum part which was pretty fun to make
This one is called "What good r words" because it was supposed to be inspired by another Erykah song (shocking I know) but in the end, it became entirely its own thing. its a weird fast trap beat with a super high pitched ghostly sounding synth lead. I'm honestly not sure I love it anymore, but it was a cool idea at least and definitely essential to the learning process
A short but satisfyling beat I made which was inspired by OUTRO by LUCKI. This is by far the most finished of all these snippets, and the only reason it didn't make the final project is because it didn't really fit the vibe of the rest of the songs.
I was getting super into shoegaze back in March, and I really wanted to recreate the vibe of a good shoegaze instrumental. looking back, this snippet is pretty cool, but it is NOTHING like shoegaze. If anything, it reminds me of Kid A by Radiohead (The song not the album)
Part of the reason I never followed through with this one, despite the initial chord progression being pretty cool, is because I tried to do a tempo change and failed miserably. The tempo shifts from 120 to 145 BPM, which I thought would be easy to pull off, but it just ended up being a headache.
This was my second attempt at a tempo change, and this time I pulled it off pretty well. It starts as a fast beat which is honestly pretty funky for what it is, and transitions into a slow synth bass solo, which was inspired by the melody from the LUCKI song of the same name. New drums come in at the end, and I think they form a good rhythmic contrast to how the first part feels. Kinda wish I had fleshed this one out more, but its still cool
This one is pretty much just a piano part, with some last minute drums tacked on that I don't really like that much to be honest. The piano part had been stuck in my head all day, so I knew I needed to put it into protools for the sake of my sanity.
This is another one I wished I had finished, because the lead synth and drums have a super cool atmosphere to them. The synth was mostly inspired from Cocoon by Bjork. I also added a little faint horn part that comes in the background every so often, which adds a cool texture.
I really hate this one, and I don't know why. I must've been upset with something that day, because the lead sounds like it was made by murder hornets. the drums are also super over agressive, and the 808 part is just a sample preset. overall, this one needed to stay scrapped
Yet ANOTHER Lucki inspired song. this one is based on the piano from the song Count on Me, and I think it came out pretty cool. The piano loop is bright and cheery sounding, and the drums are pretty unconventional but they work well.
I made this one in like 20 minutes because I couldn't sleep one night. The standout feature of this one is that its in 7/8 time, which is pretty hard to play along to, but I think I did alright. The piano is a little bit all over the place, and doesn't have much of a key center, but it still follows a cool rhythmic pattern, and I LOVE the ending I did for this one.
I'm so proud of this one. Sweet Baby James by James Taylor is one of my favorite and most nostalgic songs, because my dad used to sing it almost every night. It was stuck in my head this day, so I decided to record a little cover of it on Pro Tools, which I'm so happy with. I ended up basically finishing the song, and its in a pretty presentable state, but it felt weird to include it in the EP since it would be the only cover.
