Overview

UTSA SEE Math is an innovation to how we prepare elementary teachers and to how we provide support and enrichment experiences to children and their families in San Antonio! Developed by professors and doctoral graduate students at UTSA, the SEE Math program is designed with social justice and equity in mind: we believe that all children come with a wealth of knowledge and expertise when it comes to learning, doing, and using math. And we want teachers who leverage that knowledge and experience when they teach math. During the SEE Math Program, our new teachers will learn:

1. How to assess children's mathematical thinking in the four operations (add, subtract, multiply, and divide), fractions, and base ten knowledge;
2. How to ask questions that elicit, support, and extend children’s mathematical thinking (Jacobs & Ambrose, 2008);
3. How to implement a series of problem solving interdisciplinary tasks that are engaging and push back on the traditional ways that kids might experience math in schools;
4. How to use strength-based language when supporting children's positive mathematical identities (Aguirre, Mayfield-Ingram, & Martin, 2013; Jilk, 2016).

And in turn, children participating in the SEE Math program will engage in rich, culturally relevant mathematical tasks that we hope will support their future mathematical thinking.
