Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are free online courses that anybody can take, and those who complete the course can earn an official certificate for a fee. As Japan’s first university to launch MOOCs, the University of Tokyo began offering two courses in 2013. As of April 2025, it has provided a total of 26 courses (13 on Coursera and 13 on edX). The total number of registered learners has exceeded 800,000 from 218 countries and regions around the world.
