Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are free online courses that anybody can take, and those who complete the course can earn an official certificate for a fee. As Japan’s first university to launch MOOCs, the University of Tokyo began offering two courses in 2013. As of April 2025, it has provided a total of 26 courses (13 on Coursera and 13 on edX). The total number of registered learners has exceeded 800,000 from 218 countries and regions around the world.
UTokyo OCW offers free access to lecture materials and videos from official courses conducted in accordance with the University of Tokyo's academic programs. The materials available on this site are nearly identical to those used in actual classes.
