Here's a quick overview of our ESL program this year. It changes a little every year, and is constantly growing, but here's what we have going on right now!
Intensive ESL: **New this year!** Taught by Morgan Enburg. 7 students. 4 French/Ewe speakers, 2 Chin/Burmese/Thai/Karen speakers, 1 Spanish speaker.
ESL 1: Taught by Morgan. 10 students. 6 French/Ewe speakers, 2 Arabic speakers, 1 Spanish speaker, 1 Chin/Burmese speaker.
ESL 2: Taught by Morgan. 12 students. 5 Spanish speakers, 4 French/Ewe speakers, 2 Karen speakers, 1 Arabic speaker.
ESL 3: Taught by Prophete Saint Fleur. 18 students. 13 French/Ewe speakers, 3 Spanish speakers, 1 Arabic speaker, 1 Chin/Burmese speaker.
ESL 4: Taught by Prophete. 14 students. 4 Arabic speakers, 4 French/Ewe speakers, 3 Chin/Burmese speakers, 3 Spanish speakers.
Transitional ESL: **New this year!** Taught by Sheila Ahuja. 9 students. 4 Spanish speakers, 3 French/Ewe speakers, 1 Arabic speaker, 1 Chin/Burmese speaker.
There are just 70 students in ESL this year, which is a smaller number than normal; this is due to 31 ESL students being remote-only this semester. Class sizes are also MUCH smaller than last year due to adding two new levels of ESL. 4 of the in-person students have IEPs. There are an additional 56 students who refuse ESL services and take special ed, co-taught, general, or CP English.
Last year, 14 students exited the ESL program, and another 5 received a 4.7 (needed a 4.8 to exit). That is wonderful, considering in 2019, only 2 students exited and another 6 received a 4.7! Students who have exited the ESL program in the last 4 years all get monitored by me twice a year.
Our total number of ESL students for this year is at 157. Last year, we had 138, and in 2019, we had 120, so we have continually gone up. However, due to COVID-19, we have had ZERO newcomers this year, which is unprecedented, so if it were a "normal" year, I have no doubt that our numbers would be even higher.
