Heathenry is a modern religion dedicated to the revival of the pre-Christian beliefs that were present in the areas of northern Europe populated by culturally Germanic tribes. Because of the original tribal nature of these beliefs, Heathenry does not have “one true path”, but rather many related modes of belief. Heathens often pick one culture as a basis for their practice. The largest group of these are Norse Heathens, but there are also Anglo-Saxon, German, Gothic, Frisian, and Frankish heathens, to name a few. Despite the names and the attempts to revive those beliefs, Heathenry is a modern religion which seeks to combine both ancient and modern worldviews in a purposeful way. Some Heathen groups stick to one culture, but Úthellingu Kindred is a pluralist group.
Inclusive Heathenry is the idea that all people, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, ability, or affectation, can participate in the cycle of reciprocity and worship with our gods. The tribal nature of the original heathen religions have led some to believe that an ancestral or racial link is needed for participation, but we consider those beliefs to be both ahistorical and morally wrong. Intolerance and bigotry will not be tolerated in our kindred. We place the safety of our tolerant members over the desires of intolerant persons to be included in our ranks.
Pluralism is a philosophical tradition that seeks to create harmony between different beliefs and ideas. As a community that promotes pluralism, we believe that there is strength in the diversity of thoughts and experience. We include in our membership Heathens that identify with several traditions and who are of different ethnicities, abilities, sexualities, genders, and backgrounds. We find safety in our common ground and celebrate our many differences.
