There are many advantages to joining a reading group, including:
Learn the fundamentals of a particular area of computer science
See important research being done in that area
Become connected with mentors doing research in that area
Make new friends sharing similar interests as you
Most reading groups meet once a week for an hour, but it is up to the mentor and the group how much they want to meet. The time and day will be determined once the group has been assembled. Many groups will assign short reading or project assignments that you are expected to complete, but it depends on the individual group. This is not expected to be a big time commitment - it's mostly a way to learn more about a particular area of computer science.
It depends on the group. Some groups read important papers, while others do cool projects. Check out the group page for more information.

Most DIRP groups are introductory and many students will not have experience. Some groups will have expected knowledge before joining, so check out the group page for more details.
