Smoke & Laser

Experimental Setup

The setup of these tests depend heavily on the equipment available, mostly the strength of the laser and the optics to spread the beam into a sheet. The experiment conducted here was to visualise the leading edge flow separation and vortices. The laser was placed in the ceiling of the tunnel and shone through an opening. The sheet was aligned to the area of interest along the spand of the delta wing. Smoke was injected into the tunnel using a hand-held smoke generator. This technique is easily implemented and is a qualitative method of analysis.

Vortex Visualisation

The video to the left shows an example of the smoke being illumitated by the laser sheet, with the leading edge flow separation and vortex development shown clearly. If you have trouble viewing the video, please try another browser (Microsoft Edge seems to work best)
