The Counseling department is included with yet separate from the medical department. The Counseling department is in charge of the mental well-being of the crew and civilian staff, who works in cooperation with the Chief medical officer, As with the CMO, the ship's counselor has the power to relieve other officers and crewmembers of duty if he/she feels that their patient is suffering from a condition that may hinder their ability to perform their duties effectively, including the ship's captain.
The position of Chief Counselor has come to be considered vital enough to that it warranted inclusion in the Senior Staff of the Federation flagship. The Chief Counselor also has a diplomatic role while assisting in advising the Captain in times of first contact or also assisting the Chief Diplomatic Officer or visiting diplomats in various situations.
The Assistant Chief Counselor acts as the bridge between the Chief Counselor and the rest of the Counseling Staff. The Assistant Chief Counselor can perform much of the same duties as the Chief Counselor and may at times cover the role of Chief Counselor for various missions.
The Counseling Staff is made up of many other counselors or counselor-in-training junior officers. The staff is the pulse of the department and makes sure that the senior officers can focus on their primary duties.
